Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is probably the holiest Wat in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The main stupa of the Wat, Phra Borommathat Chedi is claimed to house a piece of Lord Buddha's relic. Built by King Sri Dhammasokaraja in the early 13th century CE, it is the holiest structure in the wat . Unfortunately, we do not have the privilege to see the relic. Never less, the inner Stupa building houses some other very unique holy statues and relics. I swear I felt very blessed when in the building.
The main stupa exterior is currently undergoing renovations with scaffolding cladding the structure. Nonetheless, It is still an awesome sight with other smaller stupa surrounding it .
A note about this Wat compared to other Wats in Thailand, it is devoid of stalls selling Thai amulets. I was looking forward to get some holy amulets ..

Absolutely a fabulous place to be. This is a local Thai holiday destination. You can find cheap accommodation, located along the river.
This air is fresh, water from the rivers crystal clear and you can enjoy trekking amongst nature

This is a very special place for Thai people who visit it in their thousands to make a wish. Apparently it is custom, if you have experienced good fortune, to take a colourful plaster chicken and place it amongst the tens of thousands of other chickens of all sizes. Presumably the greater your good fortune, the larger the chicken.
The car parks are large and much building work is taking place and there are all manner of food stalls with a significant number selling lottery tickets which might account for a good many wishes being made.
It's not that easy to find but once you find the turning off the main highway near Sichon, you simple follow the two metre tall chickens that have been places every 100 metres or so along the road side.

The Museum has been open for about 43 years-- and was built on an ancient Buddhist temple grounds! It has, as its "centrepiece" a very old statue-- about 1,200 years old-- of the Indian deity Vishnu. This Statue indicates -historically- the extent to which Southern Indian influences existed in Southern Thailand!!

Hin Ngam Beach is a vast area well gear up for future development in the Province of Nakhon Si Thamarat, near the town of Sichon. The pristine beach with good road leading to the well protected beach with plenty of fresh water and electricity supply is definitely gear for a beach destination. The various attractions nearby also added the charm to it. There are several large parcel of land waiting for the appropriate time to start their project. In the mean time, stroll along the beach with hardly anyone around is a very pleasant exercise on any sunny day.

Like Chiang Mai [in the north of Thailand] there are interesting (and meticulously restored) remnants of the historical town wall. The size of the wall gives some notion of the town's size and importance many hundreds of years ago!! Students of history as well as those interested in walled cities [in Asia and Europe] would also be very pleased to have paid it a visit!!

…BUT IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE A REAL THAI BEACH SCENE THIS IS THE GO.
Listen up true travelers, all those cool dudes in eye wateringly expensive lycra workout gear wouldn’t be seen dead south of SAMUI’s in-spots. Actually I saw very few westerners of ANY type on the Mainland coast between the Gulf Islands’ Mainland pier at DON SAC and NAKON SI THAMMARAT despite there being some lovely strips of sand along this 70km section. Which is okay – this is an area where the Thai middle-class holiday and the locals come out to play, giving the place a whole different atmosphere to the busy beach scene on the Islands.
You see, Thai’s don’t go to the beach to swim or sun-bathe. Their idea of a good time at the sand is sitting in a beachside restaurant/bar downing lotsa food and drink, fossicking in the sand and rock pools and maybe paddling in the water. Most don’t worry about swim-suits – they just roll the jeans up and go for it. The whole thing is perfectly relaxed – I particularly like the sitting in beach restaurants/bars part.
So that’s the scene that hit me on a nice Sunday afternoon arrival at SICHON BEACH. An extra – at least 3 bridal parties were getting snaps on the sand. Several beachside restaurants were packed with relatives and guests. And westerners? I was the only one – although I confess I later saw a handful when I went to SICHON CABANA’S restaurant to check the menu. Makes sense, CABANA is the most western-oriented of the several resorts behind the beach – the place caters for wind-surfers when conditions are right. Jeez – you might see a few lycra lairs when the wind is up! But the 3 or 4 couples I saw were middle aged – hardly the wind surfer demographic.
The downside: Very little English is spoken in this area – (CABANA may be different – I didn’t spend appreciable time there). Actually lack of English is not a downside to me – just added to the “typical Thai” atmosphere I was enjoying. I don’t speak Thai, but managed to communicate wants adequately.
LOCATION – SICHON BEACH is located 4km east of SICHON TOWN CENTER and about 800m south of the long breakwalls where the SICHON RIVER reaches the sea. No public songthaews (pickup truck buses) run down this way – if you haven’t your own transport grab a motorcycle taxi. My guy had no trouble finding the beach but didn’t have a clue about resort locations. If “own transport” is a hire-motorcycle better get it before arriving in town (KHANOM to the north is a good bet) – I found no place where I could rent a motorcycle. This is unheard of where western tourists frequent – Thai tourists are mainly middle class and have their own vehicles.
SICHON TOWN is 30km by road south of KHANOM, 50km south of DON SAC, 90km south of SURITHANI, 700km south of Bangkok and 70km north of NAKON SI THAMARAT.
A confusing problem to many visitiors is that SICHON BEACH is often called HIN NGAM BEACH, because the holiday resort precinct behind the beach is known as HIN NGAM. HIN NGAM BEACH is actually the reddish boulder beach immediately to the south. TRIP ADVISOR has a separate HIN NGAM BEACH page where at least half the photos and reviews are actually about SICHON BEACH, so it will be worth checking for extra information.
BEHIND THE BEACH - The HIN NGAM RESORT PRECINCT is not too bad at all. There are about half a dozen places in this area, almost exclusively Thai style and ranging in standard from lower-midrange to true mid-range, maybe better. The latter may be a bit exxy by Thai standards but pretty good value in western terms. My resort was the recently built lower-midrange THIPBUREE, a kind of Thai motor inn only 30m from the sand –pretty good place. Um did I mention lack of English? I’ll do a TRIP ADVISOR report when I get a chance.
Most of the beachside restaurants are attached to resorts but a few’re independent. I used ISSARA BEACH RESORT’s restaurant next to THIPBUREE (which hasn’t a restaurant). Great sand-side position, very comprehensive Thai menu (not big on western stuff), popular with local walk-ins, and the cheapest beer all 3 weeks of my mulit-stop Thai trip. As HOMER J SIMPSON would say – “AAAAH – BEEER!!” The efficient waitresses didn’t understand English but they still knew what “beer” meant.

If you have half and hour or so to spare and you are in the vicinity of Wat Phra Mahathat,it's worth crossing over the road and visiting Baan Tan Khun. This house has been well restored and conserved and is traditional Thai style architecture at its best.
It doesn't take that long to walk around but the furniture has some exquisite detail and is worth a close look. There are a number of fascinating old photographs hanging on the walls. It's light and airy with an interesting history.
There's no charge for admission.

Van uit mijn bed & Breakfast to-co in Sichon rijd ik mijn gasten altijd een keer naar Khao Phlai Dam om hun de prachtige gebergte te laten zien met de jungle bossen en het mooie witte strand waar je iets kan eten if drinken! Druk is het er totaal niet, misschien dat je er op zondag 50 mensen ziet, maar zeker niet drukker, terwijl je als het helder weer is aan de overkant het zeer drukke eiland Koi Samui ziet liggen!
Khao Phlai Dam is zeer zeker een bezoek waard!
