Roupel Bunker

Such a beautiful experience.. the resident soldiers were all very polite and offered us a long tour of the site along with a very interesting historical narration. You start from the hillside peak overlooking the Greek-Bulgarian borders and Strymonas river, then you can take a close look to the various firearms and defending mechanisms used in the battles during WW2 and finally you visit the inside of the fort, the actual Catacombs and have the chance to know more about how the soldiers lived inside this massive construction that was approx 6.3km long. A useful tip: its a very nice gesture to bring something along for the soldiers, such as sweets etc.

It is a Greek fortress built in 1914 and it contributed to stop the German-Bulgarian invasion of Greece that took place in 1941. It has been included in the 1930’s –the Metaxas Line, the Greek line of defense.
It is a MUST visit especially for us Greeks. We had a very informative tour with the help and guidance of linesmen and it is a spot not to be miss by anyone….especially if you are close by.
There was none in the group who was not moved!

The imposing Monastery of St. John the Baptist is unique in character and overlooks the lake Kerkini in Akritochori.
It follows the ritual of Mount Athos and is a nun monastery. If you are in the area, drop buy, light a candle and make your prayer.
The nuns are very welcoming and it is peaceful inside.
