Although accompanied by what felt like half of Bavaria, this is a lovely spot and well worth the little effort required to walk around the lake to the little cafe at the far end selling raw milk products and of course beer. Many beautiful views and lovely clear water for a swim on a hot day.

National Park center

Germany's only Alpine National Park Lofty, wild and majestic, "King" Watzmann (2713m) reigns over the Berchtesgadener Land as he surveys his kingdom: Berchtesgaden National Park. High Mountains, deep Valleys and crystal-clear alpine streams define this protected area bordering Austria. "Allow nature to remain in its natural state" is the motto of Germany’s only Alpine National Park. Berchtesgaden National Park is located in the southeast of Germany, in Bavaria and adjoining the Austrian Salzburg region. Founded in 1978, the park includes an area of 210 square kilometres and is owned by the federal state of Bavaria. In addition, the park is the core and buffer zone of the biosphere reserve Berchtesgadener Land.

Jennerbahn has so much to offer. We came back twice in three days! And it has become the highlight of our trip in Berchtesgaden.
Cable car with ever changing views overcame my fear of heights. The slow ride up to the top could be intimidating for someone afraid of heights like me. But the changing view at different height provided a timely distraction. And the slow pace made it perfect to snap plenty of photos.
Panoramic, magnificent views at the top. The Watzmann along with the surrounding alps was just breathtaking. Plenty to walk around at the top station with a short walk up to the peak Jenner. Route #12: Gipfelweg that offers a view down to the Königssee. Do heed the road condition. There's some frost when we walked up and it's slippery at some area of the route. It's the end of October.
Hiking galore! Many hiking routes for different fitness levels. And plenty of routes starting from the middle station. We rode the cable car to the top station and took route#3 Mitterkaserweg. It's indeed a beautiful descent from the top station, rather steep at times. But one is rewarded with great views along the route, including the starting point for the parasailing. Have a cup of hot Hugo at the Mitterkaseralm and take in the other side of the Alpine views. The route is straightforward and there are signs for directions too.
I can't wait for my next visit to Jennerbahn! More hiking route to explore!

The trip on the Jennerbahn isn't cheap but, if you get a clear day, it's more than worth it. Probably more worth the money than the boat trip on the Konigssee, if you have to choose.
I'm biased because a year ago my fiance proposed to me at the summit of the Jenner, but even without that happy connection, the short hike to the summit cross is definitely worth it. It's a decent, wide path as far as the viewing area above the Konigssee, but it is uphill, so be prepared to be a bit breathless! The final part, to the actual summit, is more of a scramble but not too difficult. The path was snowy on our recent visit (first week in October) and a sign said it was closed and you used it at your own risk - but most people were still risking it, including families with young children.
The views from the top, and from the cable car itself, are idyllic - and it's quite a long ride up so you get plenty of time to view them.
The restaurant at the top is pretty decent, considering it's at the top of a mountain. You can get fresh buttermilk, beer, cold drinks and a range of light meals and cakes. The gift shop is reasonable too, with a wide range of souvenirs.
If you like to hike, it's worth paying attention to the hiking paths that can be accessed by going up on the Jennerbahn. We did quite an easy hike to the Karl von Stahl Haus, just over the Austrian border, along a footpath that offers even more amazing views - it's a steep climb back up to the cable car station, but nothing too excessive. You can hike back down the mountain, or to Mittelstation, where you will find other options for walking to the alms above the Konigssee. A lot of people just go up, have a beer, and go back down again. Great if that's what you want. But if you like to walk, do look at the places (and quite simple, easy hikes) the Jennerbahn gives you access to - because there's a lot to explore in those Mountains! The tourist office in town can sell you a lot of hiking guides, though their free map is pretty good too. The yellow footpath signs will also guide you - and tell you how your path is graded (yellow being the easiest and safest going through blue and red, with black the hardest and most risky).
Very much worth it, at any time of year.
One last note - check the dates! The cable car is closed for about a month in both the spring and autumn, for maintenance.

Haus der Berge

Reviewed By Rebecca B - Nottingham, United Kingdom

We'd visited Berchtesgaden on several occasions in summer and never quiet made time for Haus der Berge. However, when we visted for two snowy weeks in January, it seemed like the perfect way to spend a very snowy Sunday afternoon.
We didn't expect much - although the building is interesting from the outside, it looks like it might be more style than substance. However, this simply isn't true. It's a brilliant museum. The main exhibition is an introduction to the geography of the Alps - from flora and fauna, to geology, weather, ecosystems and human impact. They even manage to use the stuffed animals to very good effect - spotting small birds in the wooden trees and coming face to face with otters, deer and others was both fun and educational. We learnt a lot and found we didn't want to skip anything. Just as you start to feel you might have seen enough stuffed animals and read enough information boards, you find yourself in the caves and mountain walk part of the experience - a wooden mountain structure allows you to explore dark 'cave' areas with a torch to find out about the wildlife and geology of alpine caves, then you can climb up several levels to find out more about plants and animals at altitude.
It is highly recommended that you watch the film in the last section of the exhibition - a stunning film of local weather, wildlife and scenery, with a surprise midway through that really puts the museum in its context. Brilliant.
There are also some interesting exhibits outside of the main exhibition - about the people of the area, local walking trails etc. and a temporary exhibition space which had a photography display when we visited. We loved the 3D map of the local area, with buttons to light up walking trails, mountain huts etc.
And the cafe is also highly recommended. Speiseberger's has been in Berchtesgaden for many years and has a justifiably good reputation. Also worth bearing in mind that the cafe can be visited without buying tickets for the museum!
We would highly recommend the whole experience. But leave plenty of time - at least 3 hours, including coffee and cake!

The one photo used with every German tourist brochure. And it's there for a reason. In the heart of Baveria, this is picture postcard territory. Close to Konigssee, this church is worth a visit to soke up the local atmosphere and enjoy the sound of mountain streams and fresh air. Take some photos and create your own postcard memories of your last trip to Germany.

Bayerische Seenschifffahrt

Lying in majesterial aura and aloofness, surrounded by towering rock faces, the Emerald Königssee resembles a fjord set in the Bavarian alps. A sightseeing trip is an unique experience at any time of the year: in spring, mighty Waterfalls thunder down over the steep rocks into the lake. Summer brings a rich, green contrast to the barren rock. Autumn paints a colourful tone poem of incomparable splendour. And if ice conditions allow, winter presents an unforgettable landscape.

Reviewed By Dream_harder - Stockholm, Sweden

Taking this boat trip is a good way to burn some time while in Berchtesgadener Land. In addition to admiring the magnificent scenery on the Koengissee ("King's lake") you can also stroll around the grounds of the St, Bartholomew monastery or take a hike to the Obersee ("Upper lake") along a well-worn trail.
The trail from Salet station to the Obersee can also be used by people with little kids in strollers.
St. Bartholomew monastery by itself is also a nice place to visit. Although quite small, its mountainous backdrop makes it a nice motif for photographs.
Overall, a nice way to spend a couple of easy hours.

The emerald-green Königssee near Berchtesgaden is surrounded by steep walls of rock, with the 1800-metre east wall of the Watzmann towering above its west shore.

Wonderful area and beautiful in winter too covered in snow. Lovely views! Too bad that the boats just go to Bartholomew stop only in winter. Loved watching the dear eat- so nearby too. Had a good walk in the woods and near the lake. Small shops and cafeterias were great for some small gifts and hot chocolate & apply pie.

St. Bartholomew's Church

Reviewed By daffystjob - Manchester, United Kingdom

This church isn't just a little unusual due to it's shape and It's coloured roof, this church has the best location of any church I have ever seen. When arriving by boat, it has a magical feel, it appears rather small with huge Mountains shadowing it and when you arrive you realise it is actually rather small. Unfortunately the day we went , there was a wedding in process and we weren't allowed to enter the church, how inconsiderate!!! (JOKE) So although I wish I could tell you what the inside is like, I am unable to.

Rossfeld Panoramastrasse

Reviewed By Igor B - Novi Sad, Serbia

If you are lucky enough to pick a sunny, clear day you can spend a few memorable hours on Rossfeld Panoramastrasse. For just 8 Euros for a car and two persons you get to drive on a road up to 1600metres and stop on many parking lots and see both Berchtesgadener land and Salzburger land from above. To get a real impression the pat of the road is just a couple of hundred meters lower than Kehlastein, or the Eagles Nest.
I believe that this is a must for everyone visiting this area, but only on a clear day.
