Long, wide, unspoiled, clean beach with no cafes, mess or noise. Lots of surfers from time to time but they bother no one. Never crowded or noisy. Easy parking.

Faro del Caballo

On the cliffs of Mount Buciero, point of entry to the Bay of Santona (Cantabria), you will find this magic place of turquoise waters which is accessed after almost 700 steps.

Reviewed By Jaime G - Bilbao, Spain

Starting from Santoña there's a beautiful hike along the cliffs of mount Buciero. The views from the top are stunning. If you're fit I recommend you go down the 700 steps (built by convicts) to the lighthouse. Great place to swim in the Summer! Avoid weekend bc it's a popular hike!

Santona Puerto

Reviewed By arnorab - London, United Kingdom

The town, the Anchovy Capital of Spain, is really quiet, absolutely typically Spanish, almost no tourists out of season, pleasant walks along the main Promenade and the fishing port itself. There is the usual myriad of pleasant little cafes for sipping and people watching, equally many small restaurants that do really a good value Menu del Dia, plenty of delicatessens and one or two good bakeries, a nice daily market just off the main square and huge one, selling everything, on Saturdays. From there you can get by bus to Santillana del Mar, which is enchanting, and Escalante, which is another absolutely typical and unspoiled little Cantabrian town. Night Life? Go elsewhere.

Paseo Pereda

Reviewed By nnmercman - Camberley, United Kingdom

The wide Promenade is probably very busy in the summer months but even when we visited early March some hardy locals were taking their constitutionals. At one end is the port area and at the other you can climb the 100 or so steps up to the monument of Virgen del Puerto and along to the impressive Fort de San Carlos with views out to sea and across to Laredo. There’s an impressive monument about half way along but no beach as such - you’ll just have to look enviously across the estuary to the wide expanse on the other side!

Reviewed By SIEMPREADIETA - Getxo, Spain

Fuerte San Carlos

Reviewed By nnmercman - Camberley, United Kingdom

I walked to the far end of the Promenade, noticed the statue on the hill next to the large block of flats and decided to climb the hundred or so steps to have a look. There’s a road behind the statue and I walked along to the right towards the headland and came across the fort at the end of the road. It looks run down and derelict but inside I was surprised at just how well built and large an expanse it is - guess a lot of militia were kept busy here back in the day! At the far end you can look out through the portals over the Bay of Biscay. You can also climb on top for a walk round and look over the estuary towards Laredo. There’s another structure to the left a bit higher up but I didn’t have time to explore it. The fort is worth the effort of a visit if you’re in the area.

Virgen del Puerto

Reviewed By nnmercman - Camberley, United Kingdom

At the far end of the Promenade (Paseo Pereda) you’ll see this imposing statue on the hill next to the large block of flats. I counted just over a hundred steps to the top (there is a bench halfway!) and you get some great views back along the estuary and over towards Laredo. The flats below are a bit of a concrete eyesore so you just have to ignore them. If you take the road to the right behind the statue then after a short distance you’ll arrive at the old fort of San Carlos on the headland - you can walk inside the large structure and look out over the sea and also climb on top for even better views. Worth the effort to see both the structures and the views.
