San Agustin Archaeological Park

A mountainous prehistoric site contains many imposing megalithic monuments and tombs with impressive sculptures.

Little is know about these indigenous cultures who disappeared long before the Spaniards arrived...They didn't leave any writings, only these anthropomorphic figures carved in rock, some of them several meters high. Well worth the journey...

La Chaquira

Reviewed By rapha_y_nici - Canton of Zurich, Switzerland

From the arqueological park it's possible to do a round walk to pass further sights including la chaquira. These sights seem to be usually done on horses (cheap 4hour horseback riding tours available), but it's also doable in a longer walk (alltogether San Agustin to the park, walk in the park and from there through these spots back to San Agustin are about 18km) but it's nice and relaxed (bring water, snacks and sunscreen). La Chaquira can be visited by walk of about 45-60mins one way directly from San Agustin village.
La Chaquira was not the most impressive 'stone' but with the descent to the platform and the surroundings it was nice as well. Would recommend to see this place as well due to the beautiful views. In general all of our group liked this area and the easy going hike around these different sights.

Estrecho del Magdalena

Reviewed By gyanfernando - Exeter, United Kingdom

The attraction of this place is to see the mighty River Magdalena squeeze throw a narrow gorge. This no place for sampling and then complaining about Arepas! You come here to see the river thundering through a narrow place (estrecho) So if you don't like non-Disney type places, this is not for you.
Beware not to scramble on the slippery rocks. There is a cross marking somebody's demise by the pathway.
The road to this place is best accesed by a 4x4 but minibuses can do it well. The road seems to be in a constant state of flux with road works going on.

Magdalena Rafting - Day Tours

This was my second time rafting in Colombia, and I was pleased with the guides and the experience. We were told that we would be rafting for 90 minutes, but we initially thought that would include transportation time. We were pleased to discover that we were actually on the river rafting for the entire 90 minutes. The rafting on the Magdalena was much more intense than it was in San Gil. Our guides were knowledgeable and were able to quickly help someone who fell out of the boat. I would definitely go rafting with the company again.

Its worth to go here as well, its a beautiful place on a hill, more quiet as the park and not arranged like the park. Some very beuatiful statues.

El Purutal

Reviewed By Ericdmc85 - Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Went here as part of an organised tour, paid 40'000 for a full day trip. You walk for 10 minutes up a nice path, I seen a red squirrel and some birds. After the walk you reach a plain with the historical sites spread out, it takes about 30 minutes to walk around.
It's worth going on a day tour to visit these sites and the Estrecho del magdelena. Really enjoyed my stay in San Augustin, nice people, not so much of a tourist trap at the moment, well priced food and tours!

Iglesia de San Agustin

From our balcony at La Terrazas Hotel this church is the commanding feature. Its brick exterior is dominated by the square bell tower with its octagonal top with tile roof.
We walked up to the plaza(cordoned off for future renovation) and discovered the small wooded doors open to services. We went in to see the clean white interior hall contrasting with its flat ceiling painted in a gold with a coffered appearance.

Obando Archaeological Park

Reviewed By ZenaRd - New York City, New York

Obando is trying very hard to set up a visitor center in order to increase visitors and share its history. If you are in the area for several days, then I might include the site, but it is a 45 minute drive from San Agustin - on a very steep drive up the Mountains, and there is not very much here to see other than a small number of tombs, a small museum, and a gift shop. We visited on a rainy day, which did not help. It was included in our tour of the area, so we went without doing much research. Given the choice, I would have opted for more statues as that was the reason for visiting San Agustin.

El Tablon

I know 7kCOP isn’t actually a lot of money but I couldn’t actually see where the money is going. The museum was only good because we had a guide talking to us about each object. The monuments are obviously fascinating, they have been moved from their original location! We visited another site for free and another for 3k where they hadn’t been moved?
We stopped off as part of our horse riding tour so it was fine enough but it was my least favourite of the three sites we visited...

Very interesting place to eat and drink. Did not stay at the motel. Interior is a wooden jungle with many levels and stairs. Complete with a liane to swing across the room and a fireman's pole !
