Nice sidetrip from Beaufort. These historic remains are a nice place to wander. You can picture the original church and appreciate the handiwork of the builders. Take bug spray and wear sunscreen

Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park

Reviewed By KLE2013 - Centreville, Virginia

Winding along the bank of the Beaufort River, the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park offers lovely paths, stretches of grass, swings and benches from which to experience the charm of the area. On the west end of the park is a small marina and on the east edge of the park is the Woods Memorial Bridge where Forrest Gump ran in that classic film from 1994. Just a short walk south from Bay Street and close to bars and restaurants, the park also has restrooms and parking nearby.

Parris Island Museum

The museum features large exhibit halls on the history of recruit training, 20th Century Marine Corps history and the history of Parris Island.

Reviewed By carolynv358 - Sturtevant, WI

I come from an army family, but I thoroughly enjoyed this museum and appreciated the opportunity to see this museum, base and many Marines. The museum follows the history of the Marines from the Revolutionary War up to present day. There was a fascinating film about basic training, many photos and displays with lots of equipment.and uniforms. You can browse quickly, or if you enjoy reading, you can spend several hours. Be prepared to show identification, vehicle registration and proof of auto insurance to gain access to the base

Red Piano Too Gallery

Reviewed By LesleyLaramie

I love Red Piano Gallery! They have so many absolutely wonderful and unique pieces by a bunch of extremely talented local artists. Cassandra Gillens is definitely my favorite and it is worth a visit to Red Piano just to see her exquisite paintings. But on top of that, there are the amazing baskets, the story people, the whimsical pieces in the front room and so very much more. I could easily spend hours and hours (not to mention thousands of dollars) at the Red Piano, without seeing everything. And the women who run it are so kind. They will never make you feel anything but welcome. And if you find a greeting card you like but the envelope is missing, just ask. They'll be happy to get one for you.

So definitely do visit the Red Piano. Just know that you will get lost in all the wonderfulness they have. This won't be a quick stop for most people!

Penn Center

A significant African-American institution in the United States, its mission is to preserve the Sea Islands' history, culture and environment.

Reviewed By brontz - Wichita, Kansas

The Penn Center is an African-American cultural and education center, we visited on Saint-Helena Island, while on tour with our senior citizens group. The first building we went into we saw a film, and an exhibit area. There was a man Mr. Milton who was last graduate from the Penn School. He has a book that he sells, and he talks about the film, and how when students graduated from Penn School they had a trade. The two women who were the first principles were Laura M.Towne, and Ellen Murray. They also have a gift shop, and other buildings on the grounds.

St. Helena's Anglican Church

We were excited to see the "Docent on Duty" sign out on the church door. I was a hot August day and we were greeted enthusiastically by our docent, Rebecca, and invited to come right into the cool sanctuary. She was knowledgeable, entertaining and passionate about this lovely historic gem of a church. Beaufort is a beautiful, historic town and this church has been in the thick of it since Day 1.

Fort Fremont

Reviewed By doodlespots

Finding this fort is definitely an adventure. The address was correct, but our GPS took us through a trailer park. The ruins are between the coast and a neighborhood, so we didn't think our GPS was right at first.

Here are some tips/notes when you visit:
-bring bug spray!! This is a mosquito's paradise.
-don't go at night. The park is open 24/7 and is unsupervised. There are no lights available. Also no bathrooms.
-these are ruins! This information was left out, so we were a little shocked by the appearance of the fort. Its not trashed, but definitely isn't as pretty as other forts.

All in all, this is a neat place to visit for photo ops and with the family!
