While attending a local writer's festival, I received a bag of gift items that had come from The Sheep's Nest. The packaging and contents so impressed me that I had to see the shop for myself, and I wasn't disappointed.

From the stone path to the door to the statuary, flowers and plantings and the cottage itself, The Sheep's Nest is one of those rare finds that completely delight you. It was almost as if I'd been transported from the Catskills to the English countryside. The shop has a marvelously-curated mix of items ranging from rustic to eclectic, all chosen with a thoughtful eye. it's almost like stumbling upon the perfect Pinterest page because there are so many small vignettes displaying utterly charming products, all artfully arranged.

The owner explained that her husband is a local builder and that they constructed the cottage after a visit to the UK and the Costwolds. That explains the unexpected structure, but it doesn't begin to convey the charm of the shop and its environment.

This is a must-visit destination, and if you leave Hobart without stopping by The Sheep's Nest, you've missed your chance to step out of the mundane and enter a magical, special place. I left with a carefully-packed shopping bag full of wonderful finds, and I now have a new favorite gift shop; too bad it's 3 hours away from home...

Mine Kill State Park

1/1/17 My wife and I had an enjoyable and invigorating First Day Hike at Mine Kill. No eagles this time but a happy group of First Dayers, stimulating conversations and stunning views of the Schoharie Creek, the surrounding hills and the Mine Kill Falls. We walked to the base of the Falls and marvelled at the imposing cliffs above us and the rushing water being deposited into a temporary pool before continuing its journey .
On 1/1/15 I wrote: This year has begun with eagle sightings as we took a First Day Hike at Mine Kill State Park in the beautiful Schoharie Valley in the county of the same name. Our trail guide was amazed at the nearly 60 of us that showed up because only 2 years ago, one couple who was present showed up. Parts of our hike were on the Long Path, a trail that begins in Ft Lee NJ and extends through the Catskills and into the southern part of the Adirondacks.
The cost of running the park must be underwritten by the NYS Power authority as there is no fee to enter.

Hobart Book Village

This is a well-known cluster of book stores in the Hobart area. Written about in NY Times, The Guardian, Mental-Floss and many more.

Reviewed By chara810 - Boston, MA

We happened upon an ad for the Hobart Book Village tucked away in a Catskills travel guide. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon during the "off season." There weren't as many stores as we expected, but nonetheless, there were hours and hours of snooping at all different types of books to be had.

We walked into the first shop, "Cook the Book" with a sign that stated to give a call when we were ready to buy something or wanted a coffee (with a phone next to it). My friend called and we were told someone would be with us right away. 15 minutes later a lovely gentleman came, he was the book owner from one of the other shops and he was in charge that weekend of watching all the shops. He made us some coffee, told us stories of his life in the various cities we lived in and then gave us free rein over the four stores that make up the book village and instructed us to come to his store (Adams Antiquarian) last to settle up.

International Book store had the best selection, but higher prices, "Cook the Book" was a smattering of different owners (each shelf had a different owner) but had the best prices and Adams Antiquarian has beautiful old books at collector prices, but well worth the visit to just look at the books. All the stores offered coffee, cookies and a dosage of hospitality.

Your trip isn't complete until you've gone to Bibliobarn, about 3 miles away from Hobart. The selections is out of this world, two floors of used books of every kind. We arrived at 5:45pm and they closed at 6. The owners stayed open until 7pm just for us. They live right there and shop amongst their kitchen.

We were staying close by so decided to stop by one afternoon. I am a dry wine drinker so I was disappointed at the lack of choices. I decided to try a dessert wine, raspberry which was very sweet. They did not have many choices for a wine tasting so we each ordered a glass of different wine and shared. They have a nice sitting room with couches and large chairs which made it comfortable to sip wine and talk. They also had board games if you wanted to stay for a while. No food is served.
