Outstanding site that has over a thousand petroglyphs carved into a short section of canyon wall. It is open limited hours four days a week so check the website to be sure it is open. A must see site if you like history. There was a volunteer ranger there who was so knowledgeable and entertaining that we spent over three hours listening to him lecture and interact with the visitors. The petroglyphs are amazing and you are only a few feet from them. We were there in the morning in the shade but the ranger told us that the walls and petroglyphs look different in the direct afternoon sun. A short 0.3 miles flat walk from the small ranger station to the site. The station has a flush toilet! There is a solar calendar that the ranger explained as part of the petroglyphs.

This is one great place to stop. Go during your Birthday month and you are free. Yes, there are fences, but it really does feel like Africa with roaming animals so close you could touch them. The various shows are not just animals doing tricks. They are animal keepers who love those animals, helping them to show off what makes them unique. The keepers want you to understand just how special each animal is. What a delightful day. Plan on spending at least 4 hours. Take the various tours and then spend some quality time alone with you favorites. They also have great zip lining, but if you love the animal show you won’t waste the time. Loved it.

Montezuma Well National Monument

Located in the Verde Valley area, this mysterious crater-lake supported an ancient community of Sinagua Indians.

Just amazing how the native americans figured they could tap into this natural spring. They used some of the 1.5 million gallons of water that flows up daily to irrigate their fields of crops. There is a short loop hike that takes you to the well. Take a walk down inside the well and check out the dwellings in the well walls. You can then continue were you can see the point where the well is tapped into for the irrigation canals. The path will then take you back to the parking lot. Great historical stop and it's free.

Fort Verde State Historic Park

Winner of the 2015 Arizona Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Award. Fort Verde is one of the best preserved examples of an Indian Wars period fort in Arizona. This original Military Headquarters is now a museum which contains artifacts, photos, videos, and interpretive exhibits focused on the history and lives of those who lived and served at Fort Verde: soldiers, Indian Scouts, settlers, doctors, and Native Americans. Three of the original homes along Officer's Row are still remaining and furnished with period artifacts.

I am fascinated with western history and especially the period during the Indian wars in early Arizona. This historic fort was a bit of a surprise. It is basically a small museum offering a look back at what it was like to live the life of a infantry or cavalry soldier during the period when the West wasn’t yet settled and the natives were reluctant to give up their stronghold on the area. There are three other original buildings standing which can be toured at your own pace with a written map with detailed explanations to their use and how they applied to life in a western fort. A commanders quarters, a single soldier quarters and the field doctors quarters and clinic. I roamed, taking time to read the descriptions on plaques spread through the displays. I was surprised to learn that despite the depictions in early westerns, the Indian forts had no walls or barricades, explaining that the natives wouldn’t risk attacking the well guarded open area of the fort, much preferring to attack lone outriders and supply wagons between the fort and regional outposts like Prescott. I learned a lot and recommend it for those that have the time and love the history of the area.

Medicine Wheel Lodge Spiritual Day Lodge & Wolf Sanctuary

I spent a morning here with friends and was impressed with the Lodge and its mission. Medicine Wheel Lodge is the home of Healing Wolf and her husband and formerly the home of Morgan Earp. It also served as a stage coach stop and school. Healing Wolf was called to help wolves and all wildlife and so started this their wolf sanctuary which currently houses four wolves. After an introduction, the visitor is allowed to interact with the wolves to their comfort level. Healing Wolf and her husband were inviting hosts and promote a loving and spiritual environment at the Lodge. The grounds have sweat lodges and a wikiup where some have observed unusual lights. All are welcome and donations to the rescue are (recommeded at $40 a person) used to provide care and food for the wolves and to expand their habitat. It was a remarkable experience.

Pistols & Petticoats

Reviewed By Bill C - Rimrock, Arizona

Pistols and Petticoats - The Worlds Greatest Old Time Photo Parlor is located in Candy's Creekside Cottage, McGuireville's oldest Antique and Collectable store. McGuireville is located on the east side of Interstate 17 at Exit 293, 7 miles south of the Sedona Interchange and 5 miles north of the Middle Verde or Cliff Castle Casino Interchange just off Interstate 17. McGuireville is also the site of two other antique stores, a feed store that also offers antique saddles and such, an interesting boutique which sells used clothing and sundries a gas station - mini-mart and finally a family run down home cafe..

This is an interesting photo parlor where you dress up like something straight out of the Old West and get your photo taken inside the second oldest building in Historic McGuireville. We scheduled an appointment by calling 602-402-9075 but walk - ins are welcome too.

Candy has a variety of vintage clothing in all sizes and accouterments for everything from an ostrige plumed Victorian era lady, a saloon girl floozie or an authentic Arizona Cowgirl. Men can dress up as everything from a buckskin fringed mountain man to a territorial peace officer, a gun toting cowboy, a civil war soldier or even a ball and chain convict in a stripped uniform.

We had two different poses with my wife as a prim and proper Victorian lady and also as a slinky saloon girl packing a pistol right out of the Red Star Saloon, while I was dressed as a local ranch owner straight off the range with both a rifle as well as a Colt revolver. It was an amazing experience and a whole lot of fun to get dressed up as someone else out of the historic past in Old West Arizona

The cost for a single starts at $24.95, but as a couple we paid $29.95 for the two of us. Three is right at $35 and 4 is $40. The price includes an 8x10 print which comes in a presentation mat. We bought one of Candy's barbwire frames and got all of the pictures she took of us on a CD which cost extra. Candy can also do families and works well with children.

The antique store is open from 11 to 5 Thursday through Monday but you can schedule an appointment at other times if you can't make it in during regular business hours.
