Pornanino

This unique talk on bio and chemical free gourmet extra virgin olive oil, given by Matteo, expert as well as one of Chianti's premier olive growers, is a chance to learn how the best oil is made and why it requires careful handling at each step of its production. The talk is given at the Lombardi Estate tasting room, surrounded by his 4,000 olive trees. This is also where the stone frantoio (olive press of which this is one of only 14 presses in Tuscany) is located, so you will be able to see the stone grinding wheels and press that delivers the oil from the olives. Seminars and tours are UPON REQUEST.

We were introduced to Pornanino's olive oil in 2008 and it is the only olive oil we use for salads, etc. We order the oil directly from Pornanino and each year several friends ask us if we can get some for them too.

This is by far the best Winery tour we have done. The explanation on their use of biodiversity and organic agriculture was wonderful.
The farm is extremely picturesque and very beautiful. It's great to hear all the little stories about the set up of the winery.
The tasting was extremely informative and funny. Such wonderful characters around and of course the wine was excellent.
After tasting around 20-30 Chianti Classico on our trip, for me personally, this was the best. We actually looked into a visit after trying their Reserva 2011 at a bar in Florence.
We will be back!

Our hotel booked us a tour and wine-paired lunch here. We were surprised they were open during the off-season, so we jumped on the opportunity. Beatrice was very friendly and welcoming. We looked around the shop while we waited for a second group to arrive for the tour and lunch. Beatrice poured us a glass of delicious rose (and I typically don't like roses) while we waited...very nice of our host. The tour itself was nice, but quick and nothing out of the ordinary, HOWEVER, the from-scratch lunch was amazing. My wife and I had a private room to enjoy our 4-course meal, 3 of which were paired with different wines from this winery. I tell you what, the housemade pasta and slow-cooked sauce was literally the best I've ever eaten. Ever. Layers and layers of flavor. I don't know if on-season prices are different, but these 2.5 hours were well worth the 35 euros. I would return anytime.

We dropped in unannounced driving from Castellina to Radda. The welcome could not have been warmer. Our hostess, a lovely Cuban woman, was friendly, patient and very knowledgeable. The wines, seven , were excellent with no pressure to buy. We did buy and they made shipping home easy and reasonable.
All in all, our best wine experience in Chianti.

Volpaia is located just 15 minutes north of Radda in the Chianti region, up winding roads. The fortified medieval hamlet from the 11th century, still devoted to wine-making, is like a step back in time! Here you’ll find a quiet and picturesque village not overrun with large tour buses. Plan ahead and book a wine tour and tasting with Castello di Volpaia for a behind the scenes view. And plan to have a meal at one of the 3 restaurants. We chose Osteria Volpaia (it was a little taste of heaven) but the others looked good too. I’m so glad we planned a stop here. You will not be disappointed.

Fattoria Vignavecchia

BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT Vignavecchia Estate has been in the Beccari family since 1840. It was received as a dowry when Antonietta Minucci - whose family owned the vinyards since 17th century - married Giuseppe Beccari. Vignavecchia has produced and bottled wine since 1876 when it was inherited by the couple's only heir, OdoardoBeccari (1843-1920). Odoardo Beccari was a Florentine explorer, zoologist and botanist who retired to the winery and devoted himself to cultivating the family vineyards after many years of exploring the Forests of Borneo, Celebes, New Guinea, Sumatra, the Moluccas, Australia, Tasmania and many other Islands, returning to Italy with rare zoological and botanical collections. In 1924, Baccio Beccari, Odoardo's third son, became one of the founding members of the Chianti Classico Consortium, and with the help of his brother Renzo, continued the family tradition of collecting fine vintages. The company still maintains the Beccari family's private cellar with bottles dating from 1876 to 1931. The bottles were discovered accidentally when the palace was restored in 1970. Upon the discovery, the family auctioned off one of the oldest bottles, which sold for half a million Italian Liras. Of Odoardo Beccari's four sons-Nello, Dino, Baccio and Renzo-Renzo had two sons named Franco Odoardo and Sisa who led the company from the 1960s until the 2000s. Throughout this period, Vignavecchia underwent several phases of modernization. In 1996, the company moved its headquarters from the palace's underground cellars in Radda historic centre to a farmhouse situated in the middle of the vineyards. Today, Vignavecchia is still owned and managed by Odoardo Beccari's great-grandchildren.

I love this winery. One of the owners, Orsola, shared her family history and vast knowledge with my husband and me. Then, the winemaker, Jessica also shared her expertise and passion with us. Put this special location on your winery itinerary. Their wines are fantastic! They even make a very special Chardonnay which is out of the ordinary for Chianti. Their shipping rates were the best in Chianti.

Castello di Volpaia

The wines produced on the estate of Volpaia are among the best in the Chianti Classico area, and the cellars are well worth a visit.

Reviewed By Linda Y - Frisco, Texas

The winery operates within the walls of the 11th century Castello di Volpaia, a fortified village of medieval origin. A visit here is like a step back into another time! Volpaia is located just 15 minutes north of Radda in the Chianti region, up winding roads. You must make an advance reservation for a guided tour (my email was promptly answered). This is such a unique winery, from its organic practices to the wine cellars located in what were previous church cellars. Our tour, led by Marta (who speaks perfect English), lasted about an hour. The wine tasting in the unique ‘Bottle Room’ added to the experience. We enjoyed 4 of the Volpaia wines including Chianti Classico, Classico Riserva, Coltassala (a Chianti blend and our favorite), and Balifico (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet). We then had lunch at Osteria, another lovely experience. If you’re touring Chianti wineries, include Volpaia on your list. You won’t be disappointed!

Radda is a very small town in Toscany with charm, peace and quite. The hotel adds to the excellence of the town. No matter where you go in the region you will not find a better place. As an added attraction the hotel offers sooking jessions in a modified 16 century kitchen. The menu is excellent and is aq full meal including the appropriate wines. Again you cant find any better.
Good luck and enjoy.
