10 Things to Do in Purmerend That You Shouldn't Miss

February 2, 2018 Renato Branum

Purmerend ( pronunciation (help·info)) is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. The city is surrounded by polders, such as the Purmer, Beemster and the Wormer. The city became the trade center of the region but the population grew relatively slowly. Only after 1960 did the population start to grow from around 10,000 to around 80,000 by the 2010s. From the 1960s onwards, Purmerend has seen major expansion and continues to do so. This expansion has turned Purmerend into a commuter town; many inhabitants of Purmerend (14,200 in 2011), work, go to school or spend their leisure time in Amsterdam. Purmerend is part of the Randstad, one of the largest conurbations in Europe.

Some parts of Purmerend are still original, but there is also a boring shoppinmg centre. The square (koemarkt) is good for drinks and a bit to eat.if the weather is good, tehre is a lot of outdoor Seating. Try a drink at Cafe Bakker, a still original local bar.

The pewter foundry is a family business in which now the third generation of pewterers is at work. Although technical innovations have continuously developed in recent years, here we still work traditionally with centuries-old bronze molds, the oldest of which dates back to 1697. In October 2014, we won the Gold Prize at the 4th International Exhibition of Crafts and Culture in Tianjin in China. This exhibition is organized by the IOV World, an association connected directly to UNESCO World Heritage.

We were totally disappointed! We arrived 15 minutes in advance as requested however almost needed to wait 45 minutes before getting started to find out, the Dutch speakers needed to translate the rules which was no big deal but when I made the Rez I specifically asked if it was appropriate for English speakers and they said yes which was completely NOT true. Most things written in Dutch or had to do with a Dutch saying which made No sense in English. At least make an effort to translate the hint cards in English! We were totally confused and unfortunately was waste of time & money.

Nice little museum that offers local history information. This museum has an extensive glass collection and I was surprised that glass making was more popular here than at Delft.
