10 Things to Do in Puerto Varas That You Shouldn't Miss

July 20, 2017 Natalie Tallman

Explore lovely, compact Puerto Varas on foot, the best way to take in views of Osorno Volcano and the wooden colonial homes built by German immigrants in the early 1900s. Several are designated as national monuments. Located on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, Chile's second-largest lake, the village is the low-key antidote to the Lake District metropolis of Puerto Montt and serves as a jumping off point for fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and sea kayaking excursions.

Lago Llanquihue

This royal blue lake is Chile's largest and South America's fourth largest lake.

Cows, fields, big trees, rolling hills and glimpses of water; you could be in our English county of Devon!
Apart from a few architectural merits, the towns of Llanquihue, Frutillar and Puerto Octay are scruffy and uninteresting.
The lakeside road the V-155 from Frutillar to Puerto Octay is gravel (2018) so possibly take the main road.

The lightest hike you have is 5km uphill in volcanic ash which makes for some rough trekking. The closest mirador is about 6km in. Of note the hikes are largley uncovered so bring a hat/sunscreen. The first mirador was really beautiful. Expect to spend at least 3 hours on the trail, more like 4-5hours.

We came here after going to see and Alerce Forest. Antonio Felmer collected and showcased many old objects used on farms and in farm houses. The trees in the Alerce Forest could be hundreds of years old where the collection in this museum was only a couple hundred years old.
There are stairs to be climbed for the second story.

This waterfall is in the middle of a national park. The trail is about 15 minutes each way to the falls. There is a very nice visitor center, a crafts vendor, gift shop and free rest rooms. The falls themselves are beautiful especially with the top of the volcano silhouetted in back. We were lucky to have a clear day where the volcano was clearly visible. Be careful on the path as parts are rocky and uneven. I believe it was $6 per person for the entrance fee. There are several excellent viewpoints to take photos, best being the last one. I loved it.

Situated on the other side of the Llanquihue lake (that means you are by the Osorno volcano on the kake itself or by the shore) and looking north you will have the chance to contemplate the Calbuco volcano. It is quite a big one and it eruped in 2015 apparently. I sure would have liked to see that ! Now just being by the Llanquihue lake and relaxing while looking at these two major vocanos is such a great moments of peace. A nice boat ride if you can do that would also be a nice way of doing it. While you are there take advantage of all the nice things to see in the area and please let me know if you have enjoed it. I sure hope you will.

Romahue

Only 14km from Puerto Varas, this environment and biodiversity Conservation Park consists of 300 hectares of native forest, fields, sunken forest on Maullin River and a wild animal rehabilitation center. There, we offer several activities, all guided, such as trekking the Forests, navigation through the sunken forest, fly-fishing, bird watching and a tour at the wild animal center. Your visit can last from one hour and a half to six hours, depending on the activities you choose to do. In the park we also have a "fogon" (room where we cook with fire and eat) where you can enjoy a great homemade lunch (advance reservation necessary) and a big room where a large number of people can find shelter for an event. Our principal goal is to protect our environment by making it known and giving each visitor a unique and personal experience with the environment.

Playa Venado Farm is a dairy farm that opens its doors to tourists and locals alike who wish to enjoy breathtaking landscapes of Chile’s southern farmlands on the shores of Lake Llanquihue while learning about the process of milk production and preparation of gourmet manjar (caramel milk spread) on the premises. Located on Route 225 to Ensenada, and only 16 km from downtown Puerto Varas, the farm is surrounded by rolling fields overlooking the lake and the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. The dairy cows of Danish Jersey origin are milked daily to provide the basic ingredient in the preparation the traditional homemade recipe of delicious manjar of the highest quality. This farm stands out for its good field management practices, a proper milking routine, sound animal health management, rigorous hygiene standards and special care for the environment.Visitors can tour the facilities of the milking shed, calf barn and feeding patio; learn about production inside the small processing plant, taste freshly made manjar and purchase products in the souvenir shop. This is a delicious opportunity to live an experience that combines the best of our southern farms with the sweetest of our traditional Chilean confections.

Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus

Reviewed By Dan L - Bunbury, Australia

Talk a walk up the hill to this beautiful building. Its described as being built in the "romanesque and baroque style with a painted blue ceiling and barrel-vaulted arches. It was constructed entirely of native wood between 1915 and 1918 by Edmund Niklitschek and Bernardo Klenner. Its architecture was inspired by the Church of Marienkirche in the Black Forest, Germany, constituting itself in a symbol of the German Colonization in the south of Chile." External walls are clad in painted iron sheeting. It was declared a National Monument of Chile in 1992.
Shame that the surrounding area is now losing its colonial feel with construction that is not sympathetic to existing buildings.
