Il Rifugio degli Asinelli

Il Rifugio degli Asinelli is the Italian branch of The Donkey Sanctuary, a UK-based charity working Worldwide to protect donkeys, hinnies and mules in distress. In our sanctuary we give home to over 120 animals; they come from Italy, France, Greece, Romania, and Switzerland. Here they are given a safe shelter for life and can recover from hard pasts of suffering and abandon.

One would not expect to visit a park in a small town in Italy and see trees and flowering plants from all over the world. However, Parco Burcina is this unexpected place. Located near the center of Pollone the park has parking located at the entrance. The park has an extensive collection of trees and flowering plants from all over the world which can be viewed throughout the park while walking on the paved road or hiking trails. The summit has stunning views of the surrounding area which on a clear day you can see long distances in all directions. Highly recommend spending time enjoying the park! Was guided through here by friends who live in Pollone and shared the history of the park with us.

An amazing location and impressive sanctuary. Although during our visit the weather changed rapidly and started raining heavily and fog was obstructing the view, it is an inspiring setting. We were very fortunate to attend a mass service in the Ancient Basilica which was very spiritual. Unfortunately due to a foot injury I could not climb the stairs all the way to the Basilica so I missed the Black Madonna!

Old buildings with historical reenactments

Reviewed By Tualie - Varese, Italy

"Ricetto" is a small fortified area located in towns and villages used to shelter products, livestock, farming equipment as local depot and people in case of attacks from enemies. This one is particularly interesting since is the only one to maintain medieval structure as per original designs with barns, walls and fortified towers. The majority of these ricettos spread in Piedmont and Lombardy are mostly in ruins or disappeared. There is another ricetto of interest to visit located in Magnano, 20 kms. southwest.
Free entrance, there are a couple of restaurants and many ateliers, this place was chosen many times as film location, beautiful to visit during festivals. It was quiet the day we visited it, walking in those streets was a travel back in time...

Crowning a hill overlooking the city, it is accessible by a funicular lift or by driving around behind the hill and hiking up. The square is pretty classical 1500-1600's Italy with nice views, old buildings and a bunch of small cafes to eat and relax in - worth the trip up

Reviewed By Ericad75 - Castelleone, Italy
