Crooked River Scenic Drive

We were in awe as we drove all the way through down to Hwy 20. The rock formations and lava flows are a must see. I cannot say enough about this area and few people know about it, it won't be crowded.

Part of John Day National Park. I visited here about an hour before sunset. The 'Painted' colors in the hills were outstanding at that time. When I got there, two other parties were there, but they left me along after just a few minutes.

Prineville Reservoir State Park

Reviewed By Grover R - Pensacola, Florida

I had a pleasant stop hear while on my Crooked River Canyon scenic drive. This is the mid point attraction. It is a beautiful dam created lake that is surrounded by amazing canyons, just like the river.

While I did not get out on the water like so many enjoying in boats, kayaks and paddleboards, this is still a great stop for pictures and a chance to stretch your legs. Please note this is not the end but midpoint. I entered from the south but most probably come from Prineville to the north. If you continue south, you go up to the plateau above offering great valley view of both the reservoir and surround valleys. Take time to see it all.

Meadow Lakes Golf Course

Played nine holes for the first time at this golf course and stayed for lunch. I was surprised at the options and selected the pork lettuce wraps. Way more food than I could eat. Excellent flavors and lots of accurtrimontes. Others had different sandwiches and they all brought half of their lunches home. Next time we'll probably split a lunch.

Service was slow because they were down one server, but we weren't in a hurry.

We'll be back to try their breakfast and dinner, too.

The golf course was fun and the play speed was very good for a weekend.

When you visit Pineville, Oregon, don't miss this pioneer museum housed in an historic bank. When else can you walk into a bank vault and also try your hand at a cross cut saw? This museum provides histories of ranching in Crook County Oregon, Oregon logging, native American influence, and this is just the first floor. Upstairs you'll see handmade saddles, reproduction of medical offices and pioneer living. All this for a donation. Don't miss this extraordinary museum in a lovely town.

Wildland Firefighters Monument

The memorial is in a nice quiet grove of Aspen and has a humbling tribute to each firefighter that died as you walk down the quiet little trail. The Ochoco creek park area is very nice in general and pretty well maintained. Summer time brings all sort of fun festivities to this area (also on the parade route!) and a huge number of people come each year for the hotshot memorial 5k.

This is a great place for a day or a weekend of boating, fishing, and camping. The reservoir is full and it's a lot less crowded than Prineville Reservoir. Just make sure your boat is registered and that you have a fishing license if you're going to try to catch dinner!

Ochoco Wayside State Park

Reviewed By PALTravel - Portland, Oregon

This 'park' is up on a bluff, overlooking the town of Prineville and looking towards the Ochoco mountain range. No facilities up here except for some trash cans and a small picnic area. The views are really nice on a clear day.
Facing east, it is best for view pictures in the afternoon, early evening, or night time to catch the town lights.
The most you need to spend here is 15 minutes or so. A nice place to stop and stretch your legs while admiring the view.

Walton Lake

Reviewed By Brent B - Prineville, Oregon

Great little man maid lake. Good camping on two sides of the lake. It is high up in Ochoco Mts. They close off the road to the campground come winter snows. It didn't open up for camping this year until (2016) May. Great for taking kids to learn how to fish or learn how to handle a kyak or canoe. Almost all campsights have a great view of the lake. Their is a nice trail around the lake. There is a boat launch, NO MOTORS. They regulary stock the lake with trout. There is group camping, tent and RV sites. Many of the sites are reservable on line. A nice little lake for both young and old. There is even a wheelchair accesable fishing dock.
