10 Things to Do in Pantelleria That You Shouldn't Miss

January 11, 2018 Jacquiline Darosa

This small, hilly island between Sicily and Tunisia is growing in popularity as a tourist destination (so if you’re like us, you’ll want to get there soon). Rent a moped to explore. One must-see: the island’s thermal pools. Beaches are rocky, but offer great snorkeling just offshore.

You simply have to visit this natural sauna, it's an incredibly unusual experience. Drive up the long road (follow the signposts), park up and then it's a 15-20min walk along the side of the calera - great views - then up a short flight of stone steps to what at first glance seems to be a couple of wooden benches under some trees. Then strip down to your bathers and flipflops and squeeze through a narrow gap between 2 huge rocks to sit in an absolutely pitch-dark cave filled with hot steam. Inside there is room for around 5 people and you sit on little flat rocks. Remember to bring bottled water. We shared the cave with a local retired couple who said they use the cave several times a week and they brought branches of fresh rosemary to place at the back of the cave to 'clean the air' and it gave off a fabulous perfume. 20mins is about as long as you should give it and you can cool off at the bench area outside, which catches the cool breezes rising from the valley below. It's really quite extraordinary.

Azienda Vinicola Minardi

We arrived at this winery not knowing what to expect. it is not particularly inviting from the outside. Inside was charming. The owner, Francesca, is so lovely and knowledgeable. The wine was wonderful. We were there when there was a special appetizer event on a Sunday evening with an American chef, we ate things that I still dream of eating. Stuffed zucchini flowers, local figs wrapped in a tiny strip of spicy salame, and chocolate truffles filled with passito or grappa made from their wine. Everything featured local products. The Leukos white, Gusiras nero d'avola, and their passito, of course, were wonderul! They make everything the real way, no shortcuts and no fillers.
There were kids playing in the outside area and the tour of the winery was really impressive. we will definitely go back and I hope they soon realize their dream of having a wine bar and a few guest rooms!

Montagna Grande

This was the most pleasant surprise of Pantelleria. It's about an hour drive to the top of the mountain from the city center, but the flora changes dramatically. The temperatures drop significantly, and the landscape becomes heavily forested. There are number of places with tables and benches to stop and enjoy a picnic. Provided the weather is clement, the view is fabulous as you can see the entire island. If you have a local or tour guide, you can see the hidden cave. There is also a grotto at the summit. The mountain is a great get-away for hiking enthusiasts. The locals like to hunt for mushrooms on the mountain. but--be careful--many mushrooms are poisonous. Also, there is a interesting local tradition. Pantellerians (Pantuscans) travel up to the mountain to collect green moss for their Christmas nativity scenes.

Charming winery in Khamma well worth visiting. The four of us had the paired food and wine tasting. Highlight was the superb passito de Pantelleria Ben Rye - son of the wind...super sweet wine from the Zibbibo grape. Expert comments from Stephanie our guide from the winery.
