Fort Santa Cruz

This ancient stone fort offers breathtaking views of the city and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. There is parking available right below in front of a lovely statue of Santa Maria. A not overly steep path brings you up to the fort on foot in under ten minutes. A very pleasant guide was available to give information and answer questions about the Spanish invaders, who built the fort. The vegetation along the way, cacti and what looked like aloe, was fun to see also. Definitely worth a visit.

Chapelle de Santa Cruz

Reviewed By Shimnik - Delft, The Netherlands

The chapel is located on the top of the 400m hill above sea level. Unfortunately, you cannot visit the chapel itself, it has a fence around. Either they do a restoration or it is too dangerous, because the construction is too old and might fall apart. There is a legend that in XIX century Oran has an epidemic of some disease and they prayed for the rain (do not know why rain helped) and there was rain next day. The citizens were so happy that built a statue of St. Mary.

It's worth getting some exercise and walking out to the train station to soak in the slow decay of Oran's colonial heritage. The station building is quite attractive and in relatively good condition. No-one objected to me walking around inside and clicking some pics.

The theatre at one end is quite attractive and the main square is nice but not exceptional. The town hall is currently undergoing renovation: perhaps when it is finished there will be more atmosphere. Visiting on a Friday it was all fairly quiet.

We visited on a Friday and so the building was closed and it wasn't possible to go inside. Despite this, it's still an attractive site from outside. Some further renovation wouldn't go astray. Relatively quiet in the square outside the entrance on a Friday.

Belle plage, assez propre mais peut mieux faire.
Le cadre est plaisant et c'est malgré tout mieux que les andalouses, les dunes...
Un peu loin de Iran mais cela vaut le coup.

Le Theatre d'Oran

The theatre building in the Place du 1er Novembre is the grandest of the buildings in Oran. Unfortunately we chose to visit on a Friday in the early afternoon, and then again in the late afternoon and early on Saturday morning, and on each occasion it was closed and wasn't possible to go inside. Apparently the interior is worth a look so this was quite disappointing. Nevertheless, still looks quite attractive from the outside.

This structure could really be turned into something quite exceptional. At present, however, it's in quite a derelict state and in need of significant renovations. Condition your expectations and you won't be disappointed.
