While the sturdy fortifications of the city previously did not permit the creation of state Gardens in Oldenburg, at the beginning of the 19th century Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig started creating grand palace Gardens close to the historical walls and the ducal residence. Designed in keeping with the natural English style, the palace Gardens, which extend over 16 hectares, have retained their picturesque atmosphere with natural planting and winding watercourses and paths. Garden and nature enthusiasts are especially in their element when the rhododendrons, which are typical for this region, are in bloom, and Oldenburg boasts the oldest rhododendrons of their kind in Germany.

the oldenburger Schlossgarten is in the middle of the city - just a few meters away from the big walking zone in the inner city. you can walk through, relax and enjoy the plants and flowers there. they have a nice flower house for all the exotic flowers and a small lake to watch different birds there on the water, this Schlossgarten is not too big - but very beautyfull - enjoy it ... :-)

I was visiting Oldenburg on business and took an afternoon to explore the city center. As I walked through the Marktplatz, I cam across this church off to one side of the plaza area.
Its tall spires stood out over the other buildings there.
It is an impressive structure.

1635 Count Anton Günther built a town hall in renaissance style. In 1886 the Town Hall in Renaissance style was torn dow and a new town hall was built at the same locationwith neo-Gothic and neo-renaissance style elements.

~ A wonderful time in Oldenburg visiting my family & walking in the city centre seeing the Rathaus plus all the side streets & old shops, also was at the krammer mart in October. Their fun fair has the biggest wheel in Europe.
lots of side stalls & food ec. Well worth a visit when in Northen Germany. My own parents (mother ) came from Nordenham, Lower Saxony Germany.

I enjoyed my visit to this museum which is located right in the middle of Oldenburg. There is a range of different artefacts to see from paintings to statues to more recent history. The only criticism I would have is there are no explanations in English and as my German is limited I could only pick up some of the information available.

The Horst Janssen Museum as an institution is entirely devoted to the fine arts on paper. It is dedicated to Horst Janssen (1929-1995), the great Northern German artist in drawing and etching who created great masterpieces on paper during the second half of the 20th century. The broad range of his art is impressive: There are wood carvings, fine line drawings, etchings, lithographies and water colours. The museum shows in ever changing Exhibitions the best examples of his egomaniac selfportraits, his in utterly abandon dessinated still lifes of flowers, his unmasking portraits and erotic drawings.

A really good tribute to a local artist. I was less convinced by one of the two touring Exhibitions though the other was a delight. The municipal section is a bit dull and worthy. The best feature, a relief model of the town in medieval times, was getting tatty, and would have benefitted from a projector to occasionally overlay the modern street lan

Es ist immer wieder schön den Botanischen Garten zu besuchen: egal zu welcher Jahreszeit. Es gibt immer etwas zu entdecken. Seitdem die Universität die Hand auf dem Garten hat, hat sich der Garten zu einem echten Besuchermagnet entwickelt. Vor allem bei den Gartentagen, an denen Stauden, Rosen, Kräuter und Utensilien von Privat und Handel angeboten werden. Für Essen und Trinken ist meistens gesorgt. Auch für Kinder ist der garten eine Entdeckung. Unsere Enkel sind gerne dort. Also: ein Besuch lohnt sich!

We visited Stadtmuseum Oldenburg since that is where our family originated from in Germany. The museum is very good, despite not having very much information in English, with an excellent collection of artwork and representations of what some of the rooms might have looked like.
My favorite portion of the museum were the various dioramas showing the growth of Oldenburg over history. Starting from when Oldenburg was just a small village, building up through the years to the city it was today.
If you don't mind not having a lot of English descriptions (or can roll with it) the Stadtmuseum is a very good experience and well worth the visit. Safe travels!
