10 Things to do in Odense That You Shouldn't Miss

October 7, 2021 Yuk Petri

The quirky, millennium-old capital of Fyn (or Funen), Odense is populated by street corner sculptures of trolls and monster-footed benches. Hans Christian Andersen's birthplace is crammed with fairytale-related attractions. A plethora of castles awaits in the surrounding countryside, including the 1554 Egeskov Castle with its dramatic moat, 18 miles away. Bike or walk to visit manatees at the zoo, open-air museums, the impressive cathedral, the art cinema and bustling cafés, or see the town by riverboat.

The Danish Railway Museum

Experience the history of Denmark’s railways in the authentic roundhouse from 1954. We have 21 tracks featuring iconic engines and carriages. Look inside the royal carriages, experience travelling first class and see Denmark’s oldest preserved steam engine from 1868. You can enter many of the museum’s engines and carriages. You can sit on the old wooden seats or stand in the driver’s cab of a steam locomotive. We provide a rewarding outing for the whole family, and visitors of all ages are welcome. Visit the child-sized Children’s Railway Station, brimming with trains and rails for you to play with. Go for a ride on the popular mini-train which runs every day. It is possible to enter many of the carriages and engines. All activities are free once you have paid the entrance fee.

We visited a while ago when staying with friends in the city. We're coming back later this year and my daughter has already asked to come again. We enjoyed the vintage trains, and the ride on the minature railway. A great day out, and fantastic value for money.

Egeskov Castle

We’ve seen many castles in many countries over our lifetime, but Egeskov Castle is most definitely in my top 10 list. There is something about the setting, the water surrounding it. The castle and grounds are very well maintained and the gardens so nicely laid out. There certainly is something for all members of the family. There are the classic car displays if some seldom seen cars. The massive dolls house with its intricately fashioned miniatures are a wonder and a testimony to an artistic eye for detail and quality craftsmanship. Would recommend planning to spend 4-5 hrs here to fully take in the castle and grounds. It will be hours well spent.

Odense ZOO

Odense ZOO has been elected the best zoo in Europe. We prioritize the well-being of the animals and try to give the animals as natural surroundings within their cages as possible, to increase the quality of their life as well as to give our visitors the experience of seeing the animals as close to their natural invironments as possible.

We took a day trip from Copenhagen by train to visit the Odense Zoo. It was a long day but worth it. Odense Zoo is a smallish zoo—after a full day we had seen everything. It’s not as flashy as the Copenhagen Zoo but has a lot of heart. Lots of great opportunities to get close to the animals and lots of fun activities. My son loved all the playgrounds and the treetop walk was a neat experience. We also paid extra to go sloth-hunting and feed some monkeys and it was quite a memorable afternoon. Only negative was that the food options weren’t that great—pretty much just froed food. We’ll come back again but bring our lunch next time.

Really worth a visit especially for kids. Shows how the Danes lives from 1910 to 1990 and you are allowed to touch and try everything, which makes it really a nice place. On top of this There is a whole section with clothes that you and the kids can try. The kids love this and my daughter of ten didn’t want to leave the museum.

Danes seem to really value kids - most museums we went to on our recent family holiday had really well thought-through, good quality activities for kids. Brandts was no different - they had created the most incredible experience for kids, a storytelling adventure like I have never seen before. There was brilliant dressing-up, and a whole imaginative world where kids could play and invent their own stories. We spent 3 hours just in one small section of the museum. We also saw a great photography exhibition with a music installation that we all enjoyed. The entry price was fairly reasonable too.
