This was a really rewarding viewpoint to climb up to. We're both early sixty's and found the climb hard but very doable.. (our mistake was to set off for the climb at about noon when the sun was building up...., however that said there is plenty of shade on the way up). The climb took us almost 1.5 hour, easy pace. Younger fitter people would get up in under an hour. It's a very good path that is maintained very well by the family operating it. We met the son on the way up as he was repairing sections and he was so passionate about maintaining the path. Full credit to him on what he has achieved. There are ropes at some of the tricky parts, which are very useful. As usual, water, sunscreen and mosquitoe repellant recommended... The view from the top is quite stunning and definitely worth all the effort. 360" views. Great photo opportunities. The operators are building a small covered shelter at the top so that apart from shade people can camp up there at night to capture sunrise at no extra charge. In summary a very worthwhile climb, rewarding and best done very early in the morning to catch sunrise and "avoid the afternoon heat"....

We wanted to do the 2 days one night worke shop with somedeth. It was so nice that we spend a extra night for a beautiful ceremony with his family. At the first day we could chose and help to dyeing 4 colors. After that we made some yarn and even the cotten was by our self. That was a great day. His mother in law guided me so good. In the evening we had a great dinner with his friendly family. We fall a sleep quickly in his home stay. The second day started with a lovely breakfast, and then we woved our own scarves. That was great. Somedeth helped us with everything. He talk about the situation in the village, in laos, ohh man that second day was over before he realy started.. In the evening he organized a wonderful ceremony for good luck with the neighborhood. In the next morning he drove us to the bus station in pakmong, that was not even part of the original arrangement.. But no problem at all. Thx 4 all somedeth, we have a lot of good memories!!!

We booked the 100 waterfalls day trip with Mr Mang's agency Nong Khiaw Adventure Tours. The landscape and tour were great and we totally recommend it, but it had a completely unethical component which undermined the whole experience: we were taken to a village nearby, we were shown the school while kids were in class. We were encouraged to interact with the kids. Fellow travellers filmed them and photographed them. We will never book anything with Mr Mang again. We were very glad we didn't book the mini van to depart from Nong Khiaw via the agency when we booked the tour. In Luang Prabang we found that people are rightly so campaigning against this. Go to the 100 waterfalls but Please don't book with this agency. We'd take it back if we could.

I rented a kayak from the tour agency between the two Indian restaurants on the eastern side of the bridge in Nong Khiaw and kayaked down to the restaurant next to the cave. Follow the river downstream until you see the big cave entrance on the right. 10.000 kip to the woman at the restaurant (headlamp included, though I used my own and can’t comment on the quality). The cave opening is neat, but it’s much more interesting to continue into the passage. Take a picture of the map for good measure, though there’s really only one way to go. One part requires maneuvering laying down and sideways, while another is more of a crawl. Other than those two sections, the cave is walkable either hunched over or upright. I saw some bats and interesting insects. Take a moment to turn off your light, and appreciate the silence and darkness, and the history of the cave.

Just back from the Patok caves.....after reading such negative and very old reviews I felt the need to give my opinion. Also got to say, people do your homework and read about where you’re going, google it!! This place has an incredible history, yes, I did google it!! Also if you ONLY went to the first cave, then you did not complete the whole experience of all the caves there to explore. Which, I must say was pretty amazing!! Definitely bring a headlamp/torch. I didn’t, but was given one after paying 15,000 kip entrance fee, no guide, just me and another couple, no harassment fr anyone. They were a little ahead of me n kept me abreast of what to expect. Going through the narrow tunnels and some tight spots for sure, was definitely scary and thrilling but left you wanting to keep going!! And I was by myself!! So, I say go for it, I really enjoyed the experience! Plus the scenery alone while hiking is spectacular!! Bring water and a sense of adventure, good shoes!! Enjoy it!!????????
