After having been at the Moscow Zoo the week before (half of it being remodeled and closed), I was really impressed by the zoo in Nizhny Novgorod. There is a wide variety of animals - everything from kangaroos to tigers. The grounds, cages, etc. were all clean and everything seemed well cared for. It is a wonderful place to go spend a few hours as a family.

The Rozhdestvenskaya church is one of the most beautiful one in Nizhny Novgorod.
The legend tells when the church was built, Stroganov (the merchant who gave the order to build the church) was so pleased with the structure so that asked the main builder if he could repeat the same and build another one the same church. The builder said that he could and was blinded at once.
The other legend tells that the church was built by the builder-magician. When he was ordered to be catched, he run to the bell tower and turned into the raven, and flied away.

Fedorovsky Embankment

Reviewed By Sergey G - Indianapolis, Indiana

Nizhny is all about views. The central part sits on the hills overlooking two great rivers coming together, so the views are plenty. Fedorovsky Embankment is certainly one of the best spots. The Embankment is designed as a cascade of viewing platforms. The platforms have benches and some have flowers and other decorative pieces. So it is very comfortable to have a packed lunch there on a good day. From the Embankment you can see the lower part of the city, the Fair buildings, the Nevsky Cathedral, the new stadium building cite, the Strelka, and a part of Rozdenstvenslyaya among other things. It's a top 10 things to do in the city i'd say.

Saint Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery

Reviewed By Al D - Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

It's a place there orthodox Christians going to pray, so tourist infrastructure is a pretty weak.
There are lot of souvenir shops, but only 3 extremely overclouded places which sells food.
And this is a 'lent'-like food. No meat, no diary. And all the small restaurants around in 1 km radius have the same menus.
Basically, if you want to see beautiful building you can do it in 40-60 minutes. Do all the photoshots, see everything.
It's better to combine visit to Diveyevo with visit to Arsamas, and small villages n the road from Arzamas to Diveyevo. There are many old churches on this 30 km road.
There is a parking in Monastery, but it closed even for a buses with tourists.
So all the roads around Monastery covered with illegally parked cars. But nobody cares (no fee for that)
If you have spiritual things in mind prepare to wait. Like 5 hours in line to get into Cathedral.
There are many places around which rents a bed for a night. Some of them have parking.
