The National Stud. Tours Run by Discover Newmarket

The National Stud remains the only commercial stud farm in the UK allowing individuals, small groups and large parties the chance to see behind the scenes of a working Thoroughbred stud farm. Tours of The National Stud, run by Discover Newmarket, last approximately 90 minutes and are taken by coach and on foot. The tours focus on introducing visitors to the history and purpose of The National Stud as a commercial Thoroughbred breeding operation. The National Stud is a working commercial stud farm, so the physical content of the tours varies throughout the year, depending on the season and the activities happening on the stud when you visit.

Our second visit to the National Stud was better than our first visit 5 years ago. The guide was very informative and answered questions very well. She was very sympathetic towards the animals particularly the mares when they had to undergo the mating or covering process. Obviously the covering was only described to the group as it happened at different times of year.

All Saints' Church Wickhambrook: This is the largest church in the Bansfield Benefice. In parts this church is over a 1000 years old. It is Grade I listed and completed extensive restoration work in 2005 thanks to major grants from English Heritage. The church is in a conservation area and affords lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The church is a very impressive structure and has a number of very interesting monuments and architectural features that are noted in a number of church architecture books. There is a good church guide book that can be bought and details many of these features in the church. The building allows for quiet reflection and has a well cared for churchyard which looks especially nice when the spring flowers are in bloom.

We stopped for a drink in this pub, the one and only in the village. It was during the day so there was not so many people. But my friend told me that, if you want to know the people of Chippenham, just come in the evening and you can have a chat with everyone here. Friendly owner. Next time we visit Chippenham I will make time to visit this pub in the evening.
