This championship golf course is only about 30 minutes from Washington D.C., but it has a feeling of privacy and seclusion.

A bit of a hike for some, but it is a fabulous course. Several elevated tee boxes, with wonderful views. Course is in great condition, with a great pace of play. It doesn't have a whole lot of water, but is challenging. They also have the best clubhouse food around- come up with great daily specials, and grow produce on site. Very nice covered patio to watch golfers come in on 18. It is a bit pricey, but it is worth it.

Adventure Park USA

Since the summer of 2005 when Adventure Park USA opened its gates, guests have been raving about this exciting family entertainment center. Adventure Park USA is a 17.5 acre Western theme park featuring a 22,000 square foot building to accommodate indoor as well as outdoor adventures. The park's Western theme infiltrates all of the store fronts, mini golf courses, laser tag, and thrilling roller coasters. Owner Larry Stottlemyer opened the state-of-the-art facility with hopes of becoming one of the best amusement parks in the area, something he has definitely accomplished. Mr. Stottlemyer previously owned and operated the Putt-Putt attraction in Frederick, a local favorite. He accomplished extraordinary amounts with this franchise, hosting an arcade, a roller coaster, 2 miniature golf courses, concessions, water wars, parking, and laser tag all on only 1.7 acres of land. Despite the abundance of attractions currently available at Adventure Park USA, the park is rapidly growing. With plenty of land to expand, Mr. Stottlemyer hopes to one day introduce an incredible water park to Adventure Park USA. OUR MISSION STATEMENT: At Adventure Park USA, we are committed to presenting our guests with an amazing amusement park experience. With unforgettable attractions, compassionate and committed staff members, convenient party planning packages, corporate event options, a day care, and a summer camp, there's something to fulfill the whole family's quest for adventure. We took four grandchildren ( Ages 10, 7, 7, 4) here, and they had a blast. It is a small park with a variety of basic rides, including faster ones that the 10-year old boy enjoyed (coasters and go karts) and easier ones for the littler ones (mini coaster and spinning tea cups). We did not have big expectations, and we were not disappointed. It was a perfect outing for us. There is also a fairly large indoor play area, as well as a small cafe with a limited menu. The park was not crowded at all, so we had only brief waits for the rides. I think older kids would find this park boring, but it is perfect for the younger set.

Linganore Winecellars

Linganore Winecellars is a family operated vineyard and winery nestled on 230 acres of picturesque rolling countryside, 4.5 miles northeast of historic New Market, Maryland. Established by Jack and Lucille Aellen in 1971, our first 6 acres of vineyards were planted in 1972 and the winery opened in 1976 in the lower half of a 19th century post and beam barn which previously housed the farm’s dairy operation. Using Lucille’s father’s hand winemaking equipment, we processed 6 tons of grapes our first year. In 1977, we held Maryland’s first wine festival as a way to introduce our first vintage to the public. In 1978, to meet consumer demand, we introduced the state’s first semi sweet grape wines, an off shoot of our German-Swiss winemaking heritage. With the knowledge and experience in the production of these lighter style wines came the introduction that same year of our honey and pure fruit wines. By the early ‘80s, the winemaking responsibilities were taken over by Jack and Lucille’s son Anthony. Also in the early ‘80s, new experimental grape varieties from the grape breeding program at Cornell University were planted in test plots in our vineyards. The success of many of these new hybrids has been shown in expanded acreage and dedication to winery production. As the winery grew, so did our commitment to our customers. In 1982, we redesigned our tasting and sales facility to make it larger and more accessible to the public. That same year saw the expansion of both the festival grounds and the picnic areas. Since then our schedule has expanded to include 5 major festivals and more than 20 smaller indoor events throughout the year. In 1983, recognizing the growing interest in regionally produced wines, Jack Aellen worked to establish the first federally designated grape growing area in Maryland, the Linganore Viticultural Area, which encompasses 90 square miles of land around the winery in the heart of Maryland. In 1989, we introduced our custom label program for special occasions, private and corporate functions, and weddings. In 1990, Anthony introduced dry fruit wines to our customers as an alternative to dry grape wines. Also in mid 1990, Jack and Lucille’s youngest son, Eric, took on the management of the vineyards. By 1997, expansion was in the works again with the addition of a new 5,000 sq. ft. warehouse and bottling facility which moved this part of the production out of the original dairy barn where the winery operation remained. This move saw the upgrade of bottling equipment from an all manual system which could handle 12 bottles per minute to a semi automatic line at 22 bottles per minute. In 1999, expansion was in the works again with the addition of a 6,000 sq. ft. state of the art tank room and processing facility. This addition increased our capacity to over 100,000 gallons with enough expansion room to take us to close to 200,000 as we grow. We installed a German membrane press and numerous refrigerated tanks in the press room and banks of refrigerated fermentation tanks in the tank room which increased juice quality and in turn increased the quality of the finished wine. In 2000, with over 40 acres of vineyards, we purchased the state’s first mechanical grape harvester. This machine greatly increased the speed at which the grapes can be harvested. We could now harvest in one hour what an eight man crew could harvest in one day, reducing time from harvest to processing to about 30 minutes. Decreasing the time from harvest to crush greatly increased overall juice and wine quality. 2003 saw the addition of a new bottling room to house a state of the art fully automated Italian bottling line, handling 60 bottles per minute; this was a substantial increase from the 22 bottles per minute with our previous bottling system. Additional new tanks were installed which increased capacity to just under 150,000 gallons. In the fall of 2004, we started renovation of the 19th century bank barn which housed the winery in the lower level for its first 23 years. Completed in 2006, this grand structure with its black walnut beams and towering ceilings is now the home of our cask aging cellar, a new tasting/sales room and a spectacular banquet facility. In 2005, we installed a centrifuge to clear the wines of sediment after fermentation. Centrifuging the wine eliminates the use of settling chemicals for clarification before aging and bottling. This process has significantly increased wine quality. In 2011, power supplied to the winery was converted to 100% wind power, leading us to win 2011 Green Business of the Year, in the small to midsize business category, from the Baltimore Business Journal. We also received a grant from the Department of Agriculture which allowed for the installation of 2 Electric Car Charging Stations, that are powered by a sun tracking solar panel. Our most recent endeavor was the installation of a wind anemometer, which will record wind speed to determine if we can install our own wind turbines further reducing our carbon footprint. In looking toward the future, the third generation of Aellens is already hard at work around the winery forming their base for taking the winery into the future. Melding Jack’s German-Swiss winemaking heritage with Lucille’s Italian winemaking roots and ever conscious of our customers tastes, Anthony has created a splendid variety of wines which have won over 200 medals in national and international competitions. Producing over 30 wines, ranging from stylish white and red dinner wines to elegant semi-sweet grape, fruit, and honey wines, our winery enjoys a reputation as a fun place to visit and a relaxed place to sample wines in a casual setting. Lucille’s cookbook about serving and cooking with wines has consistently wetted our customers’ appetites. We welcome visitors 361 days a year to experience a fun filled afternoon in a country setting where winemaking really is a family affair.

This was an AMAZINGLY fun experience. I can't rave enough about how wonderful it was!

This was my second hot air balloon experience - my first was in June in Napa with Napa Valley Aloft, which was also fantastically wonderful. So now I'm hooked on hot air ballooning. By contrast, the friend I was with had never been up in a hot air balloon before, and he was a little scared - he doesn't like heights. However, he confirmed that it was very fun and NOT scary at all, and he wants to go on another ride soon! There is no turbulence in the ride - it's very smooth and gentle - very serene. If you're on the fence about hot air ballooning and think it might be scary, you should definitely just go for it! It is NOT scary and you might end up hooked on hot air ballooning like me and my friend. :)

Non-morning-people (like me!) should be aware that hot air ballooning typically takes place in the wee hours of the morning - you show up to your launch site before dawn. However, some sunset launches are also available. I will say, though, that even though getting up that early is brutal, it's totally worth it! Ascending as you watch the sun come up is really a breathtaking experience. (My friend and I were coming from Washington, DC and stayed overnight the night before in the Frederick Residence Inn so we were a little closer.) Also be aware that there's not really anywhere to go to the bathroom, so go before you arrive.

Tailwinds is a family-run company and it was fun to meet the whole family as our crew (chase crew, etc.). Everyone was so nice and friendly and was always concerned with our comfort and making sure we were having a good time.

The worst part of the experience was not having to get up so early - it was that the flight had to end and we had to come down! :) We did have a nice Champagne toast upon landing, which was great. We would have been happy to stay up all day. I can't wait to go back up again! :)

I gave this attraction a 3 but it could be a 4 if you take into consideration the history you will learn about this location and area and the extremely colorful and interesting tour. The property dates back to 1760 when the family owned over 1500 acres. The sitting/wine tasting area is under a large tent -- comfortable and interesting, with a view of the rustic property. The owners will give you a great tour and the information is extremely interesting. There are more white wines to taste than reds and two Rose. I liked one of the Rose, one of the whites and a Red. All of their wines are leggy and have body. Some have a sharp after taste and not as smooth as I usually like. But...this is a fun place and the owners keep it personal and fun. Only being in operation for five years the outlook is very good. Note: Unlike many new wineries they grow and produce their own grapes and wine.

It was a somewhat slow start to the day with limited patrons midweek. My grandson (5 yr) enjoyed touching and petting all the wonderful babies, from bunnies and chicks to calves and goats.
Several chickens and turkeys were roaming freely.
The pig races were also entertaining, followed by the hayride.
Concessions are VERY limited, so plan to bring your own or go somewhere nearby.
We enjoyed our visit, but I would not say this is a full day activity. After 2 1/2-3 hours, my grandson was ready to go. Depending on their ages and interest, you may stretch it into a 1/2 day.
Entrance fee is cash; you can get a coupon for $2 off by going to their website and enrolling your email.
Overall, a great visit.

On an impromptu trip to Frederick, we had several hours to explore the historic area. Not having seen the city for several decades, we were pleasantly surprised at the extent of the refurbishing of older buildings and the variety of shops, bars, and restaurants throughout the area. We didn’t have enough time to get to all of the museums and other attractions in the vicinity, so we’ll have plenty of things to go on a return visit.

The Original Playhouse Children's Museum

The Original Playhouse has six rooms of interactive and pretend play to satisfy all sorts of curious and creative minds. Ideal for preschool-3rd grade, it's a house full of experiential learning and simple fun! Seasonal outdoor play garden.

Reviewed By trientalis - United States

To appreciate the Original Playhouse you have to be clear on what to expect. This is a small "house" with focused, creative, calm, fun, and thoughtful sections. It isn't fancy, or big or expansive, and it also isn't crazy, noisy, or exhausting. Which is great.

To put it into perspective, we can go with our 1 and 4 year old kids and easily spend a half day without getting bored. There is a room of water play, a room of costumes, a room of building items, an art room with loads of great stuff to create with, a Chinese house and store area, an animal hospital, and two clean potties. It's clean, well maintained, and when the owner is there during the week it's a super friendly place. The younger woman on the weekend isn't as friendly and welcoming when we have been.

There is a great restaurant next door for brunch or dinner, and the Original Playhouse is about to open a backyard play area which looks great.

We also participated in Science Camp there and it was great! My son loved it and didn't want to leave.

My only suggestion would be to have healthy snacks available, I was personally disconcerted with the offering of candy when you leave, and the snack for the science camp was rice crispy treats. With the focus on child development and joy I'd like to see healthy, nourishing, organic things to nibble on.

Go and check it out!

Bring your blanket and picnic dinner. And next week, enjoy the fireworks show.
