Our guide from Walk About Tuscany took us to this wonderful small winery. Surprising, beautiful art. Excellent wine. And, perhaps the best of many outstanding meals we had in Tuscany.

Sometimes differentiating great wine is like splitting hairs. Wine can be very subjective. So in this case the warmth of the hospitality and the attention to detail seperates Ciacci Piccolomini from some of the others. Niccoletta was very knowledgeable and sincere. My wife and I will always remember our visit celebrating 20 years of marriage.

My husband and I have rented the house called Sargeto each year for more than a decade. It is surrounded by olive trees, Cyprus trees, vineyards, sheep and wildlife. It is part of a charming, little hamlet with fancier digs but we prefer the space and openness of the house. Comes with a private pool, ping pong area, huge fireplaces, etc. Perfectly maintained.

The chapel formerly housed a Renaissance statue sculpted in 1590 by Andrea della Robbia. This has been moved to the Church of the Madonna in nearby San Quirico. The chapel is frequently photographed and has been classified as a UNESCO World heritage site. It is located on a hill and has cypress trees on either side of the building. The chapel was locked, but its exterior is photogenic.

Azienda Agricola Patrizia Cencioni Solaria

The superb wine from Montalcino is born in the vineyard and develops in the cellar. Two fundamental steps carried out with the utmost care and knowhow. The main element though is the summer sun that gives character to the grapes. Solaria is the Montalcino winery who has focused on these characteristics . the vines located on a high plateau on the southeast side of the rising Montalcino and bath in the heat of the dun from dawn till dusk! Patrizia Cencioni gives you the opportunity to tasted the wines directly at the winery; there you can discover the secrets that create Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino one of Italy's greatest wines.

Abbazia di Sant'Antimo

Reviewed By Tony E - Switzerland

We first visited Sant'Antimo nearly twenty years ago. The twelfth-century church is as gorgeous as ever, with wonderful arches, pilasters and columns and a whole series of fascinating sculptures. When we first visited, Benedictine monks were still in residence and we listened to them singing mass - and bought CDs of their singing (the only commercial 'contamination' visible at that time). Now the monks have left for quieter fields in France, and the tourist operation has moved in. Coachloads of tourists crowd the church and its surroundings, and the lawns are full of picnickers. There is a shop selling tacky souvenirs, and even a kiosk within the church with a till that sounds a loud bell at every transaction, echoing around the church. This used to be a place for meditation and thinking about history and the meaning of life - it is now a slick tourist operation, but still well worth a visit, especially for first-timers who cannot compare with what once was.

Mate Winery

Reservations are required for winery tours and tastings. Please contact us via email or the phone number above. The Etruscan celebration of life--beauty, food, and wine--is alive today on the Mate family's boutique wine estate. Twenty years ago, Ferenc and Candace Mate, author and painter, fell in love with an abandoned 13th century friary--its romantic tower, courtyard, and two private hills. Within its 28 hectares of Mediterranean woods were fragrant fields of wild herbs. They planted vineyards on Etruscan-built terraces and in seven fields of varying altitudes, expositions and subsoils. For each site, they carefully chose a grape varietal, rootstock, and clones. In marl, mineral-rich shale and tufaceous soil--all abundant in calcareous fossils of a primordial ocean bottom--vines planted to a high density, forced their roots deep through varied layers, enhancing the grapes' flavors and perfumes. The Mate's hand-made wines, from organically grown, carefully selected grapes, are internationally acclaimed.

We (couple with 3.5 years old son) have been planning this visit and wine tasting for months. Knowing Ferenc Mate' books and having a chance to try Mate winery' vines we were really excited when we enter the place. We must admit the meeting with Mate' family was an extraordinary experience. Peter was a person who show us the winery and host us while Candace herself prepared for us a vegetarian (as we kindly requested) snacks.
For us it was an unforgettable experience and time we spent with Mate family was a clue of our stay in Tuscany '2017. Finally we purchased few bottles of a very good wines to remember the visit even longer. In our joint opinion if you consider to experience wine tasting in Montalcino' area you MUST consider Mate' place - and than read all the books to understand why we felt like at close Friends' house while being there.

I planned 3 wine tours, 2 in the Tuscan countryside and one in the countryside outside of Florence and this one was by far the best. We all enjoyed this one so much that we compared everything else to it and was just simply disappointed that the others could not measure up. I know it is a little pricey, but the tour is comfortable and informative and the tasting was a joy. The attention to the small details do not go unnoticed and the wine is delightful. I usually just do the tour and the tasting and move on without purchase and guess what we purchased for the first time in many trips. I have already made suggestions to friends that this is the one to see and skip the rest or see this one last so you do not ruin the visit to the other places.

This was a truly awesome experience! We made Reservations a few days in advance and it turned out to be the highlight of our day in Montalcino. Once we arrived we were given a short history lesson while we took in the amazing view. Tiziana was our guide for the afternoon and she did a great job answering all of our questions and explaining everything. Next we entered the cellar and we learned about the production techniques and different choices that winemakers can make throughout the process. She also explained the certification and standards for the wines. After the tour we went up to the lovely dining room and enjoyed a wine tasting paired with a delicious lunch. We tried 4 wines and had a simple meal of salumi and cheeses, panzanella, homemade pasta, and a small cake with the most delicious strawberry sauce imaginable. They even offered grappa and dessert wine after!
Throughout the whole process, the owners were present and friendly, especially the one who runs the show...a cute little dog named Rubino.
We spent 3 hours here, did not want to leave, and ordered a case of the delicious 2012 Brunello di Montalcino...plus a bottle of the 2011 Riserva to take home and enjoy during our trip. Tiziana really made it special by being super friendly and attentive. Not only did we talk about wine but also music, Italian culture, and even the differences between Tuscan dialects and accents!
Grazie mille!
