Ophir Keshet - Tour guide in Israel

Private tour guide in Israel

Reviewed By asquared13 - Short Hills, New Jersey

We spent 11 days travelling around Israel with Ophir and it was a trip my family and I will never forget. Our travel agent planned our trip and then Ophir executed the plan perfectly. We drove around in his minivan every day to our different destinations, and he was extremely knowledgeable about not only the sites we were going to but also nearly the entire country. He would constantly point things out to us as we were driving, and is seemingly well-versed on the history of nearly every site in Israel! He was quite flexible and accommodative when we needed to change up the itinerary a little. We loved how he took us to restaurants at lunch where the locals would go, not just the usual tourist choices. He was great with our 16 and 15 year old sons as he has his own children around their ages, though I believe he would be great with younger children too. All in, a trip my family and I will never forget, especially thanks to Ophir, and we will certainly recommend him to our friends travelling to Israel in the near future.

I was amazed at the everything there, from the kindness, professionalism and knowledge of the workers to the variety of activities and plants so well kept! The organization even on a Holiday was just amazing! They even have a trolley to show people that have difficulties walking (children, elderly and even us... when a bit tired). They have short and long trails, bicycles and and signs for almost all the trees and bushes so we can all learn. It is just a very inspireing and peaceful place to visit. They have a gift shop/ cafeteria where you can get some souvenirs and light food and snacks... and excellent coffee! The toilets were very clean and the entrance is worth every shekel! One thing I really enjoyed was the opportunity to learn about the Bible and how life was in those days!

The monastery is a very unique one. Monks who took vow of silence live there. They make different kinds of wines and other beverages, home made cookies, marzipan bars, truffles and some other things. There is a great path around the monastery for those who love nature and would like to have a look around the place which is very buautiful.

Tel Gezer

Located halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on the western slopes of the Judean Hills, this archaeological site has unearthed important finds from ancient times including the two oldest Hebrew documents ever found, a row of ten monolithic stone steles from the Bronze age and a magnificent water cistern.

This was one of our first stops on our Israel tour. Going with GTI guide Ronen and our Bible teacher, put every stop at the top! I don't see how you can truly learn about these ruins without a guide. We also walked over to the cistern nearby and our group went inside. Incredible to think about Joseph being thrown into one of these.

Stalactite Cave Nature Reserve

Reviewed By SunnydaleHuis - London, United Kingdom

A beautiful cave that has been largely untouched for god knows how long - the atmospheric lighting is man-made and the humidity is fixed to preserve the site but everything else is natural. If you can tolerate the ridiculous educational film beforehand, it is a beautiful experience.
The only thing I would note is that there are no dates on any of the signage - we were informed this is because the signs kept getting taken down by the strictly orthodox who didn't want to hear about the world being older than 6000 years.

Ayalon Institute Museum

Ayalon Institute's fascinating story is about a top secret operation which occurred between the end of the Second World War and Israel's independence (1945-1948). On Kibbutzim Hill, north of the city of Rehovot, under the vigilant eyes of the British who ruled the area, a clandestine bullet factory was built underground. The plant was code named " The Ayalon Institute" by members of the Haganah. The building and operation of the "Institute" was a co-operative effort by members of "Hatzofim Aleph" (a pioneer group) and people from the local Jewish clandestine military, who moved to Kibbutzim Hill.. Two shafts leading to the underground plant were disguised under a laundry room and a bakery. After the establishment of the State of Israel, the bullet making machines were moved to a centralized factory. Members of Hatzofim Aleph left Kibbutzim Hill and founded Kibbutz Ma'agan Micha'el in 1949.

Got a GETT taxi from Tel Aviv (116.00nis) to go to Ayalon Institute. We had missed this site when we were last in Israel in July. Everyone said it was a highlight of Tel Aviv and so worth the time to get there. You must nook a tour in advance esp if you need it in English. My hotel called for me a got me on a tour. I arrived 7 mins late and was walked over to where the group was watching an introduction movie. Our guide Sagi was wonderful at explaining everything.
It was truly amazing what these very brave and very smart young people did to assist in the war effort. I am so glad I was able to get out to this historical kibbutz and learn their history as well as my own.
There is a metal circular stairway which is very narrow so please be aware of you can not climb up or down stairs. This is underground so there are no windows if you think you might get claustrophobic. If your tour group is full the space will be tight.
Make sure to have a reservation. It was 24nis for an adult

Um El Umdan

Reviewed By aggada

Relatives directed us to visit this very small and revealing site. You can visit it in less than 30 minutes and see everything. The dig is on hold, I understand, but should resume because there is more to discover. Although the official description does not mention it, I think we saw a mikveh as well.
The following description is from the Modiin Map.
Site uncovered in salvage excavations of the Israel Antiquities Authority during development of the Buchman neighborhood.
The findings include graves, a bathhouse, and a Synagogue from the second century BCE.
Archaeologists Alexander Onn and Shlomit Vexler-Bedolah, who were in charge of the dig, believe that these remains are of the ancient city of Modi'in, hometown of the Maccabees.
In their view the Arabic name of the site ("Umm el-Umdan", "the mother of pages"), even preserved the name of the place "Modi'in", with a slight change.
