Rancho Lopez

In the El Eden area, this restaurant features an ample tray of shrimp, fish, steak or combos in an open air location overlooking a river with smooth boulders that invite the customer to take a dip after lunch. I wrote a review about El Eden and did not realize that Rancho Lopez was the actual restaurant we ate at. There are people zip lining in the trees that you can watch as you dine. I love this place! Would go back in a heartbeat.

I am happy. I grew up in LA and am a Vietnam vet. I served in the Air Force. And I learned how to be happy and teach others this magic. Connecting with nature on the back of a horse crossing a stream or holding your breath as a sea turtle swims under you is a healing force that will affect you in surprising ways. Day to day living makes people forget how to be in the world but not of it. I think I've got it nailed.

Rancho Manolo

I wasn't a fan of Arnold or the Predator movie so seeing the "Predator movie set" wasn't at the top of my list. However, I didn't realize the movie was filmed at such a beautiful, wild, yet peaceful jungle setting. This is where we rode. The Mismaloya river is clean, clear, with surprising waterfalls over boulders with delightful swimming holes in the jungle/ Rain forest and then you get the amazing views of the mountains, trees, birds, & the little Mismaloya village. Would suggest calling and making arrangements with Victoria (who is wonderful) perhaps for earlier in the day when it's cooler and before the buses go bringing everyone up to the set for lunch. Although there's plenty of room up there, and when riding on the road, there is room for buses and horses, and everyone gets by just fine, and the horses are really used to the routine. Chava was our guide and took very good care of us. An off the beaten path adventure we really enjoyed. We love the locals here in Mismaloya, everyone is kind and welcoming and we loved this experience! Quite an adventure! Thank you Victoria & Chava! Nice way to start the new year! P.S. wear long pants if you can. You can take the Boca, Mismaloya bus south or a taxi out of P.V. to the Barcelo Hotel to get to there. Horseback touring: A much better way to enjoy the views (rather than the noisy, polluting, ATV option!)

Mama Lucia

Local tequila distillery that many locals did not know existed. I was staying at Costa Sur and took the local bus to Mismaloya (10 pesos and 15 minutes from Costa Sur...probably around 30-35 minutes from Old Vallarta). Take the bus marked Mismaloya - Boca. Once you get off the bus at Mismaloya, it is an easy five minute walk. Walk across the road (east) and you will see a sign (the sign says Mr. Tequila) but it is Mama Lucia. Use good walking shoes...much of the walk is on large stone and cobble. The tour itself is short in distance but long in educational value. Ask for Noe (Noah) for your tour. He is a Latino that grew up in Long Beach and speaks fluent English, and he has a great sense of humor. He explains the tequila making process in great detail and has a great deal of tips on how to drink tequila and Raicilla (more on that next). We got the short, but informative tour by Noe, and we got down to tasting. He started us with Raicilla (pronounced rye-SEE-ya). Normally, raicilla is a very local distilled beverage similar to mescal that is made by moonshiners. This one, however, is licensed by the government and has seals. It is not as smokey as other raicillas and is quite drinkable. Before the first drink, Noe goes to great lengths to instruct you on how to drink raicilla and tequilas properly without the coughing or gasping for air. Next came the blanco tequila, the reposado , the anejo. All very good, all very smooth. The flavored tequilas were next and I wish they were available in the states. They were Mandarin orange, Almond, Coffee, vanilla cream, chocolate, another that was blended with pomegranate. These flavored ones are all around 18% abv and can be sneaky. They would be great baking or topping desserts and ice cream. There is a gift shop where some pretty cool stuff for sale, including all the beverages you just consumed at the end of the tour. I recommend this place at the beginning of your stay rather than the end because if you don't finish what you bought and you do carry-on, you can't take it with you on the airplane.
