Taking the ropeway is an excellent means of safely seeing the views surrounding Tanigawadake and the wall of Mountains that divide Gunma prefecture and Niigata prefecture. It offers breath-taking views in all seasons for families, couples and the elderly. In Winter time, skiiers and snow boarders use the rope way to reach the skiing slopes at the top of the mountain. The Summer time view, as well as the spectacular colours of Autumn are also opportune seasons to ride the ropeway.

Tenjin is a biig mountain and receives some of the highest snowfalls in Japan with a correspondingly long season from November through May. The piste is somewhat limited and probably worth a couple of days but the backcountry is endless, easily accessible and steep enough to handle the deep powder.

Doai Station

Doai Station is on the Joetsu Line that heads from Minakami in Gunma to Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata.. To get there it has to go under Mount Tanigawa. The station before Doai is Yubiso and that is the start of over 10kms of tunnel. By the time the train reaches Doai it is deep under the Mountains. To get back to the surface from the underground platform at Doai you have to climb hundreds of steps. If you arrive at the station by car, head inside, turn left and prepare to be amazed!

We took an 8-minute train that costs 240 yen from Minakami Station to Doai 土合 Station (trains bound for Nagaoka 長岡 every 1 to 4 hours; no SUICA scanner), which is 462+ steps underground - pretty cool place! Then we walked right along the road for 20 minutes uphill to the ropeway. There's also a direct bus from Minakami Station's Bus Stop #3 once or twice an hour that's 670 yen and takes 20 minutes. Set ticket covering return bus & ropeway is 2920 yen at the tourist info center opposite Minakami Station to the left from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
The 2060-yen return ropeway is every 3 minutes and takes under 10 minutes. There's a restaurant up there. From there, you can walk up or take the chair lift which costs another 720 yen return. On the top, the panoramic mountain view all around is amazing! Signs show 2 trails going to the summit or to a hot spring. In early November, it was 10 degrees but felt much colder so make sure you have a jacket, hat, and maybe even gloves. Last bus back is at 4:56 pm. Last train back from Doai Station to Minakami is at 6:16 pm but I think the ropeway closes at 5 pm.
We wish we had gotten there earlier to walk the trails but getting there around 2:30 pm did give us plenty of time to have a good look around. There was some partially melted snow on the ground so shoes could get muddy.

Minakami is certainly not the best looking town but this little walk along the river was nice enough, with some autumn colors although there's much better autumn colors at the nearby Tanigawadake or Takaragawa Onsen, both about half an hour by bus. Weirdly enough, I saw a 2-page section for this place in a Japanese magazine but Tanigawadake is just a small blurb. It's definitely not a must-see as lots of Japanese rivers look very similar to this so do it if you have time. There were people bungee-jumping from the bridge which kind of made it slightly more interesting.

Doleland Minakami

In the huge grounds of DoleLand Minakami, which is about 65,000 m², we are growing eight kinds of fruit including strawberries, apples, grapes and cherries. Visitors can enjoy the taste of fruit or varieties in each season, learn how they grow, and even harvest throughout the year. DoleLand Minakami, is an edutainment farm where visitors can try making jams, pies, etc., and enjoy BBQ and/or various dishes with plenty of fruit served at a restaurant and a café.

We went to Doleland yesterday, August 11th 2015 with our 9 year old daughter. She chose to pick plums instead of seedless grapes. They had different choices, you could eat as many plums as you could (30minutes, 400¥) or you could pick 1kg for 600¥.
Our daughter wanted to take a cooking class(1375¥/person) to make a pineapple pie but the staff requested an adult to join the child which meant we had to pay the price for two. We decided against as we could buy a whole pie for that price.

From Minakami drive Highway 63 to Fujiwara until you see the big Maramata dam. Stay on the highway, which turns west at the Horamoto waterfall, passing Yunokoya Hot Spring. Highway 63 leads to Oze.

Reviewed By quiggel - New Zealand

Highway 63 turns into a narrow road between Minakami-Fujiwara (passing Yunokoya Hot Spring) and Oze. It follows a river filled with big rocks and with several Waterfalls. There is no hiking path along the river; you can park the car and walk along the road. There are a few small parking areas. When you keep following the road after it leaves the river behind you drive through the forest over to Oze. We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful yellows, oranges and reds in the higher area on our drive (10 October). In the higher region there's a kind of camping ground with a toilet building. People park their car and put up their barbecue, and a few walking tracks seem to start from there.
