Paper Moon

Cited as a must see in the New York Times travel section, Paper Moon is a one of a kind store located in McGregor, Iowa-just a block from the Mississippi River! Ken, Louise, and Jennifer opened the Paper Moon in 1994. The historic 1860’s building proudly went solar in 2009. The Paper Moon has been described as “the ultimate in therapy shopping.” The ground floor hosts a unique array of gifts, including jewelry, greeting cards, toiletries, housewares, and tons of fun stuff! The second level balcony holds an array of new books and handmade housewares; the third level is 1,000 square feet of children’s books and toys in a relaxing atmosphere. Inventory is in constant flux and Louise and Jennifer work hard to make sure the store has something for everyone. Customer service is important to staff at Paper Moon. They can help with personalized shopping, free gift wrapping, gift certificates, and free delivery in Prairie du Chien, McGregor, and Marquette. Stop by and visit!

Paper Moom is one of the best bookstores I have ever visited. Louise and Jen have a fantastic inventory of books and novelties. If you don't find a book you think you'd like, ask one of them and trust me, they WILL find a book for you. It is worth making an appointment to browse.

Pikes Peak State Park

The park lived up to its billing as a fall color must do in NE Iowa! Even though we visited on a Thursday there were a lot of visitors. It was a beautiful fall day and we took advantage of a well placed table on the bluff to enjoy lunch prior to a hike. We took a couple of back loops off the parking lot to work our way to the main attractions; the Bridal Falls Overlook and the Crows Nest Overlook. The hiking was moderate with some elevation. Fall colors were prime and we thoroughly enjoyed the exercise, fall color and the views. After a few requisite pictures we were off to our next adventure, the Effigy Mounds National Monument.

The docents were very knowledgable of the history of the Froelich Tractor and the man who invented it. This little shop is where the Froelich tractor was invented which was the beginning of the John Deere tractor industry. Such a small town with a huge impact on the farming industry. I grew up on a family farm in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Many of the items in this museum are what we were using when I grew up. It was really nice to see so many familiar things that I grew up with and the docent was so nice to spend time telling us about them. We drove all the way up from our home in Texas just to see this place, the Bily Clock Museum, and the National Farm Toy Museum. Don't miss spending some time here. It is great!

This place was the highlight of our recent drive through NE Iowa. Situated on the bank of the Mighty Mississippi in the tiny hamlet of McGregor, IA, Rivertown Fine Books is a must-see for anyone! Not really into reading? No problem! This place has antique maps, prints, and a few odds & ends, enough to look at & admire for the non-reader. Not really into antiques? No problem! They have many selections of (fairly) current books at a great price. Be sure to check out the children’s section with it’s extensive collection of books, games, and even a few toys that will take you back to the days when children were given books to look at when mom & dad wanted them quiet. You know, before we began to raise the screen-gazing zombies we all see in restaurants now. But I digress...Put this place on your Travel Bucket List & don’t miss out on an amazing store with a friendly, knowledgeable owner!

Spook Cave

I have actually been to several caves in my time. This was the first time though I took a boat ride thru a cave. The tour takes about 45 minutes and It was about a 20 minute wait to purchase the ticket and then actually get on the boat. The boat holds about 8 people plus the tour guide. The guide was a young student, I was please with his sense of humor and professionalism. If you don't like bending down to avoid rocks or you are claustrophobic then, I'd say you should stay away. I am not, so I really found it a great novelty. Clean rest room are on site. They also serve a great WI ice cream that you can get while waiting. I really didn't know what to expect and this tour exceeded my expectation. Enjoy!
