Matrei in Osttirol is a market town in the Lienz District in the Austrian state of Tyrol (East Tyrol). It is situated about 29 km (18 mi) north of Lienz within the Hohe Tauern mountain range of the Central Eastern Alps. Its municipal area comprises parts of the Granatspitze Group and the Venediger Group, with the Großvenediger peak (3,657 m (11,998 ft)) as its highest point. The population largely depends on tourism, seasonal agriculture and forestry.

This area of the Alps is relatively unknown to the Brits. and indeed many others as walking here in the high alps you are often alone or with the Ibex, Chamois and Marmots as well as variety of birds, incredible views, stunning wild flowers etc. and of course cows and sheep and goats. Lower down is mature mixed forest, higher up stunning views, glaciers, some tough climbing and scrambling with some protected routes. Take it seriously, it repays the effort.

Me and my lovely girlfriend walked all up and down this valley. It was my 4th time there and her first. Regardless we both left Dorfertal considering it as our favorite place on earth!

This is a very nice church in late baroque stile with an history going back over thousands years. The position on an hill overlooking the valley and the Mountains ,is superb and the old farms surrounding it add to the bucolic setting. Inside there are very nice painting illustrating the early years of Jesus.

This quaint chapel is one of many interesting features of walking in this valley, as is the adventurous walking up into the alps on very well marked paths. There are huts for refreshments and even overnight stays scattered around the valley and higher Mountains, some lifts to save the initial ascent in other areas. Stunning walking, get fit in amazing scenery.

This was a truly fantastic day. Wonderful scenery made even better by the sun shining. Our trip was guided by a park ranger whose knowledge proved invaluable to making this a truly memorable day. Even saw several marmots to make the day complete. Well worth doing.

Fascinating old church in the Matrei Valley.
What makes it special is that it has two altars , one over the other.
When you sit in the pews you can see them both.
The lower is dedicated to St Nikolaus and the upper is dedicated to St George.
You have an excellent view of the valley from the church which is situated at 1035 meters above sea level.

Perfekt backe för små och mellanstora barn samt nybörjare. Personalen är i det närmaste besvärade när man kommer och "stör" deras dag. Undrar om ägaren vet om detta? Vi kom till 14 då det på deras hemsida stod att man kunde köpa tvåtimmarskort då. Vi fick då veta att vi måste köpa heldagskort eller vänta till 14:30 för att köpa 2timmarskort. Noll flexibilitet. Vi väntade 30min och fick då köpa 2timmarskort. Efter 1,5h var barnen nöjda och vi åkte hem. Pisten var väl skött men förvänta er ingen service och hjälp med liften.

The employees make you feel very safe. Multiple levels of difficulties in rafting are possible, from beginner to advanced.
