WOW!
One of the most spectacular drives I have done. The roads are great and the scenery is amazing. There are a few World War I memorials and Cemeteries nearby, sometimes slightly off the route but worth a detour. Some great original trenches at Mémorial du Linge and a stunning view from the Gedenkstätte Hartmannswillerkopf above Cenay.
We also found a memorial of a crashed WWII Canadian Halifax Bomber at Willer-Sur-Thur.
Gorgeous scenery everywhere, cows with traditional bells jangling in the hills.
We ate Tarte Flambée at the Chalet Hôtel du Grand Ballon. The hotel is a little run down especially from the outside but the Tarte Flambée were excellent as was the service. A little further towards Cernay is Ferme Auberge du Grand Ballon. They cook all there food straight off the farm. Unfortunately we were too early, as with most restaurants around here, they only open at 7pm but they were friendly and helpful and the view is fantastic.

Beautifully unspoilt area with long walks around the lake's perimeter, which is surrounded by treed areas interspersed with small sandy bays (unsupervised swimming ok) and picnic areas.
Unlike lac de Gerardmer, Longemer does not have developments along its shore which makes it naturally untouched and much more tranquil.
We were there on a warm, clear Sunday so it was busy, but once away from the pedalboat rental area it was quiet and uncrowded.
I believe that in the summer months it gets clogged up with caravanners, but it was perfect in June.

Entering the garden we were welcomed by the owners and sat and chatted with them before embarking on a self-guided tour of their garden. A winding path leads up the hill and then down again, marked with the letters of the alphabet to ensure one follows the optimal route; the total distance walked is perhaps 1 km, and the slopes are gentle. Everywhere there are cleverly matched groups of flowers (mid-July) interspersed with often witty sculptures by local artists. Entry costs Euro 5, and you can buy seedlings of some of the plants you have seen on the way out. A most pleasant way of spending a couple of hours of a spring or summer afternoon.

A very nice lady guides you around, but it is only in French. Quite interesting collection of machines producing mainly woven cotton goods i.e. bedding tablecloths etc.,

The ski arena is quite nice but honestly overcrowded… it 's a total nightmare to get there by par and to park… you can see cars everywhere..even bus shuttles have issues to reach the resort as car are parked where they are not allowed to be… The price is very affordable.. you have a two modern chairlift… the rest is outdated… meaning long queues on week end… The domain is well maintained. It could be far more enhanced from a business point of view, adding nice terraces , place to eat and drink…etc… Now, we are not in the alps so what they did there is still very valuable… but it misses a bit of organization and a bit of commercial touch..

This is an amazing structure on top of the hill above Gerardmer lake. Walk or drive up the lane near Ramberchamp camp site following signs till you reach a circular parking area. Then follow the right hand rocky path up through the trees. You will then spot an enormous wooden tower which has a concrete spiral staircase in the centre. If you dislike heights - you probably won't make it! If you do- the reward is fabulous 360 degree views over the hills, towns and lake of Gerardmer!
