Heritage Train

Traveling in a century old train. Booking early is necessary especially for decent seats in first class - as only few are available. Rack and pinion drive on slopes. Looks to be diesel-steam locomotive pulling/pushing the bogies. Worth the experience to see the hills from the train.

Highfield Tea Factory

Reviewed By AjLud - Coonoor, India

Tucked away on a nondescript hillside, and away from the regular traffic, this estate & factory lie down-slope from the Coonoor-Kotagiri district road, about 2 km from Sim's Park.
The factory is open to visitors with a prior tie-up.
Good for a 30-min detour, if you have the time.
Can buy factory-fresh tea.

John Sullivan Memorial

Reviewed By JojijosephTDPA - Kochi (Cochin), India

Mr. John Sullivan who was the British Collector of Coimbatore in 1817 contributed a lot for the development of the Nilagiris and he deserves even a better memorial. The John Sullivan Memorial at Kannerimukku near Kottagiri has a good collection of photos of the past Kottagiri and the vehicles used then. Though we don't have much to see here, the history says that Mr. John Sullivan contributed a lot for the development of Nigiris. He was a great man with a vision and while seeing this memorial, I was just visualizing the days he was there.

Longwood Shola

Reviewed By Dilip S - Vadodara, India

At 1630 on 15th Nov we zeroed on Dodda aka Longwood Shola of 116 hectares , an immaculate tropical evergreen forest of stunted vegetation found only in the southern part of the Western Ghats , in the immediate vicinity of Kotagiri . More than fifteen villages around Aravenu depend on this Shola as it is the prime source of water to them .
The forest harbours eighty species of birds , Barking deer , Bonnet macaque , Indian gaur , Indian giant squirrels , Nilgiri marten , etc . As Vaijayanti could not walk much , we did not venture deep in the woods . Still we could spot Barking deer , Bonnet macaque , Malabar pied hornbill , Spotted myna and few Indian gaurs .
This is a very good place for trekking as it has very scenic trekking paths .
