10 Things to Do in Khalkis That You Shouldn't Miss

October 15, 2017 Renato Branum

Chalcis (/ˈkælsɪs/; Ancient Greek & Katharevousa: Χαλκίς, Chalkís) or Chalkida (Modern Greek: Χαλκίδα, [xalˈciða]) is the chief town of the island of Euboea in Greece, situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point. The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek χαλκός (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the area. In the late Middle Ages, it was known as Negropont(e), an Italian name that has also been applied to the entire island of Euboea.

Bridge of Khalkis

The place where the bridge is built, is the narrowest point of the channel, and the water current can reach the speed of 15km (9 miles) per hour! It is really interesting to watch the reversion of flow direction that happens about every 6 hours. The exact time of reversion is determined by the position of the moon.

What's interesting about an old fashioned bridge you might ask? Well there are two things to be honest. Maybe three. Yes, three. The third one is - it has an art gallery underneath it. Two - the water current changes underneath it every few hours during the day - the current pulls into one direction at a high speed, and then into the other direction. Interesting - right? One - it opens each night, and people both local and not gather to look at the boats using the opportunity to go through. All sorts of boats, small, big, medium. Interesting place. The time in which the bridge will be open is updated daily and displayed at both ends of the bridge. It's less convenient when you forget about it and head for a night out in the city, and then either on the way in or out the bridge is open, and you're forced to watch the boat "parade" ;)

Karababa Castle

The view of the castle is very nice. You can see Chalkida from one end to the other.
The castle itself is not of interest. There is a venetian/ottoman wall round it in quite good condition, and a typical Greek church within the castle. That's all more or less.
It is a short hike from the city center (15-20 minutes).
Go only for the view.
Beware: it closes at 15:00.

I don't understand why this is such an attraction. The architecture is nice, but the surrounding fence has graffiti and doesn't look well maintained. The peninsula that it's on is beautiful and the water surrounding it is beautiful. If you have the chance, walk by it, but it's nicer to just walk along the water.

Emir Zade Mosque

Reviewed By Nikos051 - London, United Kingdom

Since most of the monuments of Venetian and Ottoman Chalkis have been wilfully destroyed, the 17th-century Emir Zade mosque with its elegant lines and imposing bulk stands as an isolated reminder of the Muslim past of this city which has seen so many empires come and go. (The museum in the Karababa castle on the Mainland provides an excellent overview of this rich history.) No longer in use as a mosque, it is now a museum housing interesting temporary Exhibitions. It is a pity that the minaret and arcaded loggia have perished, but exterior and interior are impressive. The pretty Fountain is a later addition. The nearby Synagogue and church of Agia Paraskevi with the recently restored Bailo's residence complete the multi-faith ensemble.

Everything was really tasty and I've arranged an order to be shipped back home to the UK. If you ever have the chance to visiti Chalkis stop by for a quick treat.
