Skyhunters in Nature

Reviewed By Eric G

Schloss Paffendorf

Reviewed By Richard-Roadman - Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands

It' s a beautiful building in a very nice setting. The building is used these days as bistro (party center), art gallery, and, the reason for my visit, the RWE lignite-mining exposition.
This is a very informative exposition on the lignite (brown coal) mining in the area. It's not to big but it does cover all aspects. Also there is a very good movie (also in english) on how the process works and everything whats involved with the mine-works; really worth looking. When stay-ing in the area or if you want to know more of the mining activities in the area it's definitely worth a visit; entry is free.
There is also a very nice garden to stroll around if you have some time to spend.

Phantasialand

Phantasialand is a magical place with one of their kind and world record holding attractions for both small and great. Come and experience the six different themed worlds: Berlin, China Town, Deep in Africa, Fantasy, Mexico and Mystery have more to offer than you might think. Themed orientated snacks and restaurants are waiting for you. So are the several artistic, impressive and unique shows. For extra long andventurers you can stay in one of our two Hotels: Hotel Ling Bao in China Town and Hotel Matamba deep in Africa will show you the cultures of their world.

I've spent two days in the park with my girlfriend.
Good:
- all new areas and attractions are well designed and constructed, beautifully decorated and very thought out. They know their brands and materials.
- shows are all to be recommended, and there are plenty
- broad range of attractions for all ages
- their rollercoaster really do get some speed
- food is reasonably priced and of high quality, even when compared to non-themepark restaurants
- attraction waiting times are never too long (max 45 minutes on a busy day) due to German efficiency
- clean toilets
Bad:
- older attractions aged badly and maintenance has been neglected as well. Simply close attractions like the Hollywood Tour, it's well past its date.
- it's a pitty that they don't seem to invest in high potential zones like Wuze Town. It really could be something...
- shows are very entertaining, although the acting is... well, german; you know, little refined and sometimes even a bit clumsy
- communication is primarly in German. I understand that it's a German theme park, but lots of guests come from neighboring countries and we all have one common language, and that's English. Simply take English as your default language and everybody will understand and you don't have to translate everything to French, Dutch, Spanish, ...
I truly recommend this park next toppers like Disneyland Paris, Europa Park and Port Aventura.

Cologne Cathedral

This giant Gothic Cathedral, which until its completion in 1880 had been under construction for over 500 years, is perhaps Germany's most famous religious structure and includes two huge towers that serve as the defining symbol of Cologne's skyline.

To be honest I am not religious in any way, but even so I can't help but admire the planning and work that went into this superb building over hundreds of years. Externally it is one of the most impressive buildings in the world, but internally it is even more impressive. Well worth a visit.

Brauweiler Abbey

The Brauweiler Abbey is home of a cultural and service center of the LVR. After the dissolution of the Benedictine Abbey at the beginning of the 19th century, the cultural monument went through a varied history - from a hostel for beggars and workhouse to a concentration camp, Gestapo-Prison and state clinic for psychiatry. Today you can follow the historical traces of the almost 1000-year history of the abbey. In addition, the cultural center offers numerous events. Many of the premises can be rented for private and professional purposes.

Gymnicher Muhle

This was very enjoyable. Here, you can interact with the different water exhibits. The preserve details the evolution of the area and the importance of the mill which dates back to before the 14th century. The museum offers much information and is an important part of the visit. The Falconry is not to be missed. This was much better then I expected. Serving as a rehab for injured birds, the show is first rate and done very well. Afterwards, we were given the opportunity to pose with the birds. That was great fun. The owner who spoke fluent English was generous with his time and explained in depth how the falconry came to be. The restaurant offers good regional dishes as we ate there twice, once for lunch, great goulash, then for tea and sweets, incredible Belgium waffles with cream and cherries. A very nice touch on a fall day. Easy to reach from Bonn, Dusseldorf or Cologne, worth the price of admission. Be aware this is all done in German.

Schloss Augustusburg

Reviewed By Rey M - Sarnia, Canada

Another must see attraction when visiting Cologne is the UNESCO Bruhl Augustusburg Palace. It was the estate residence of the prince-archbishop of Cologne. It illustrates the power held by the religious head of the church during the medieval times. The palace is elegantly impressive especially the rococo style architecture of the grand staircase. The rooms are very similar to the palatial residence of other European royalties. A good hour can be devoted to view the palace as well as the well maintained garden and grounds. Not all the rooms are accessible, but the guides were very informative and accommodating.
