Kastoria Lake

The lake has two sides, the north and the south. We visited both in the night and we were excited by the merry atmosphere of greek families, young people, group of friends, all locals, who entertained themselves sitting at coffee shops, taverns, restaurants, etc.talking, eating, listening to live music while eating obviously having a wonderful time (the north side being in fashion nowadays, while the south is low key, romantic with dim illumination).Either in daytime or nightime, people are fishing in the shade of tall, green, plane trees that frame the lake all around. It is worth having a good view of the lake sitting at the yachting club, which can be also a night club at weekends Early in the morning, birds of the local fauna, complete the palette of the lake colours.

Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery

Reviewed By Michael A - Katerini, Greece

definetely it is a "must" visit the two churches (small monastery)of Panagia mavriotissa monastery .it is two churches of 11th century byzantine era and it is one of the top ten visits of the otwn of Kastoria.driving by car by the lake or walking by the lake round of the city you will find it .
The Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa (Greek: Παναγία Μαυριώτισσα) is a monastery that is built on the spot where troops of Byzantine military commander George Palaiologos encircled the attacking Normans in 1083. It is believed that the emperor Alexios I Komnenos (r. 1081-1118) built the monastery there to commemorate the event.[1]
The monastery was initially named Mesonesiotissa ("in the middle of the island") and in the beginning of the 17th century it renamed itself to Krepenitissa ("of Krepeni") after the name of the nearby village Krepeni. Sometime from the middle to late 17th century it changed its name to Mavriotissa ("of Mavrovo") after the Greek village Mavrovo near Kastoria city.Surrounding the region of the lake of Kastoria there are 72 churches and chapels, Mavriotissa being one of the earliest of them.
someone can go also on sunday morning for the liturgy and other days as the religious programm of the christian greek church.

Even though we went to Perama in Ioannina this still caught our curiosity and we were pleased to see that it was different and just as interesting. A beautiful array of nature's artwork in the form of stalactites and stalagmites coupled with small lakes make this site a must see. Tablets are available for the tour for non Greek speaking people also.

A walk around the lake of Kastoria, which is one of the most beautiful sights, is really a pleasure. Its natural environment is home to beautiful swans, and makes the visitors travel mentally. We had a tour of the lake, visiting also a monastery of historical value, along the coast line and sitting at a traditional cafe to enjoy a cup of mountain tea. As we visited Kastoria on the day of the feast of St. John the Baptist, we had the opportunity to participate in the carnival celebration, the traditional "rakoutzaria", dancing in the streets and drinking local wine. The last day of the 3 days celebration, we went to see the parade of the carnival groups. Moreover, we visited a museum in a village outside Kastoria with wax figures, two traditional and famous stone mansions and some of the Byzantine churches. In conclusion, we spent 3 memorable days.
