Kalmar Castle

The history of this legendary castle goes back 800 years. For a long time, Kalmar Castle was an important fortification and known as the key to the kingdom because of its strategical location. The Swedish-Danish border was located only a short distance to the south, because Scania and Blekinge were Danish territories at the time. Kalmar Castle was given its current design during the 16th century, when the Vasa kings Gustav, Erik XIV and Johan III rebuilt the medieval castle and made it into a Renaissance palace, furnished and decorated in continental fashion. Even before then the castle had played an important role in Nordic politics, for example as the location for the signing of the Kalmar Union in 1397. This event was celebrated during the whole year of 1997, the union's 600th anniversary. Kalmar Castle is a symbol for Kalmar. The castle's history features international politics, court intrigues, fiery sieges and fierce battles. Today the castle is vibrant and lively place where many people visit.

As you can see, it is actually hard to enjoy the bridge whilst on it. Driving a narrow lane at 100 km/h requires attention to other things... But of course, the passengers can enjoy a nice view of the Kalmar strait (Kalmarsund), Öland and the city of Kalmar. However, if you want to have the best view of the bridge, Öland and the strait I do recommend a visit to Varvsholmen (look it up in the map), the most eastern of Kalmars small Islands. If you park your car on one of the public parkings (only 30 kr per day), you can take a 70 m stroll to the small sea wall. The wall is broad enough for you to host a picnic with a beautiful view! Of course it can be a little bit windy, but thats the charm of the sea!

Kalmar County Museum

This museum has a delightful exhibit on the prolific Swedish painter Jenny Nystrom. Her family willed her entire collection of work, and many artifacts of her life, to the museum. She popularized the Swedish Tomten elf with her charming book and card illustrations. There's a very nice illustrated book about her, in English, in the shop.
There are also a really fascinating series of exhibits about a 17th century warship that sank and battle and was recovered in 1986 (I think). It was found by the same man who located the spectacular Vasa ship in Stockholm. Recovery of artifacts continues with dives each summer. I think it was not possible to raise the entire ship, but the artifacts are truly amazing. There are many well-done reconstructions explaining shipboard life and sea battle tactics.
I think children would have a wonderful time at this fine museum. There's a charming cafe and a nice shop.

Took two 10 year old city boys - they loved watching the geese and chickens, petting the rabbits and goats, and feeding apples to the horses. There's also a great play area for children of all ages - and a very reasonable cafe for drinks, snacks and ice creams. The boys enjoyed it so much we went back 2 or 3 times during our week's holiday visiting family.
