By far the best thing we saw in Athens, by far the best design by Renzo Piano (and we have seen half of his world), by far the most impressive new cultural center in the world-an absolutely a marvel, a joy. Do not skip this. Go at twilight and stay for events. Anyone with any love for architecture must go. What a wonderous amazing testament to what spaces human beings can still create. A space of utter beauty, from glass, steel, concrete - with incredible use of water and plants- serving its aim, full of families, young and old, in all sorts of activities. Hours upon hours of watching every age, color and type of person come and go will forever stay with me. Watching people love their time in this space is amazing. A sunset to die for. A wonderous space to just hang out, sit around and mull the world. Dancing fountains, great concerts, good food. The upstairs sitting area, with a piano, played nonstop for hours by two amazing visitors as groups gathered with evening food, or stopped by to say hello made for another mellow evening. The glassbox observation spaces, the terrace cafe, leading to the slope of stairs, and then slope of many a garden, some of them on the roof of major buildings, playgrounds with unique aspects in every corner, attention to detail, from each light, to the water fountains, to every plant. Ah, if only the rest of the world was building spaces like this. I associated the name of Stavros Niarchos mostly with a playboy image of excess and I though with sadness of what Renzo Piano, the man who started with the Pompidou, was now creating in terms of banality of his recent US spaces. This placed made me think it was an appropriate, grand bookend to the career of an architect for architects (who knows how much of this was his, but who cares) -- and it also allowed me to forgive the excesses of the exceedingly wealthy. For a few days.

The Greek National Opera’s mission is to offer audiences -in Greece and abroad- high-caliber productions, by presenting operas, ballets, operettas, operas for children and music recitals, among others. Performances are held at GNO’s two stages at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (Stavros Niarchos Hall and Alternative Stage), as well as at the open-air Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

Even having read about the venue we were still astonished by its scale and ornateness. One of the most modern opera houses in the world, having opened only in 2017, it is a tribute to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and architect Renzo Piano. We enjoyed a rollicking performance of Die Fledermaus. A farce that was given a marvellous treatment by the players. Transported from its Viennese scene to a modern Athenian setting, the popular operetta was splendid. During the first interval we explored the architectural wonder, walking to the fifth floor and delighting in the vistas over the auditorium and its spaces. The second interval was an unexpected pleasant surprise. A tribute and celebration of Greece’s National Opera was presented. Beginning with mostly black and white film of the company’s history and highlight moments, including those featuring the incomparable Marie Callas, it was strikingly unveiled by a man who we were told is a member of the opera staff. Next up was calling to the stage of past opera stars, each receiving flowers and enthusiastic applause. The night culminated with the entertaining third act denouement, set in a prison.
