Looking to take a trip to where something big happened? Try Mastodon State Historic Site. The site is the home of the Kimmswick Bone Bed, one of the most famous and extensive Pleistocene ice age deposits of fossils, including a number of bones of giant mastodons. Interpretative trails and picnic sites dot the landscape and a museum tells the natural and cultural story of the Clovis culture, which existed in the area between 10,000 and 14,000 years ago.

On a beautiful fall day we headed to this park because neither of us had been there. After paying the$4.00/per person fee we watched a short movie about the area and exhibits we would be seeing. It was very informative. The displays were nicely done. We took one of the trails which was well marked. There were plenty benches to rest on. I recommend stopping there if you are in the area.

The selection was amazing. The staff was also very knowledgeable and right there to answer questions. Everything could be purchased in small quantities so if there is a specialty tea or coffee you want to try, you can. This shop is in walking distance to The Blue Owl Cafe.

This FREE historic site interprets the role of Dunklin in Missouri's history, and provides a scenic overlook of the Mississippi River.
Perched on a bluff above the "mighty Mississippi" River at Herculaneum, this grave provides a quiet place to reflect on Missouri, then and now.
Gov. Dunklin sought to establish public schools on a firm and stable basis. In 1834, he recommended that a site for a state university be chosen and partially funded through the sale of land. Five years later, the University of Missouri became a reality.
This state historic site is in a very peaceful and tranquil setting with ample benches for sitting and reflecting and handicapped accessible.

So I had been here once about 6 years ago and it looked so different this time! Lots of places to enjoy the nice weather outside and good selection of food all at a reasonable price. The wine was good and I'd recommend the chardonel at $18 a bottle. Pretty property and on the weekends they have live music. Was a few miles off the highway but not hard to find with gps.

This is one of very few if not the only shop in Kimmswicks that's has hand crafted , made local, original items. From the rag rugs, to the personalized glass items, aprons of different unique styles , walker/recliner arm covers , jewelry from simple to elegant. You MUST stop in and see Debbie, the owner, and the endless finds. You will sorry if you don't.

The auction facility is top notch, very big but yet very accommodating. Me and my girlfriend had a blast picked up some really cool and unique items for very reasonable prices. This is without a doubt our new favorite auction house, and only a 20 minute drive from
St. Louis! The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable; if you go you will not be disappointed.

If you are like me, possibly a little weird, and like to visit old cemeteries, this one is worth the drive. It's a little tricky to find, but you can google a map and directions with the address, which is 7801 D. Road, Waterloo, IL. The centerpiece is a mausoleum that was built into the bluff. There are grave sites and memoriams dating to the 1700s. The mausoleum is empty now, apparently due to vandalism, and you can go inside it. There has been an association founded to clean up and restore the cemetery, and they have done a great job of cleaning off graffiti, and replacing and restoring the tombstones. They have a Facebook page, and accept donations for help in the next phase of restoration, if you are so inclined.

The Missouri Civil War Museum is housed in the old 1905 Jefferson Barracks Post Exchange (PX) and Gymnasium building, formerly part of the Jefferson Barracks military post, which is still an active military installation to this day. Renovations began in 2003, and were completed 10 years later in 2013, with an opening date of June 29, 2013. During the Civil War, the property which this museum is located upon, contained various hospital ward buildings, where suffering and death occurred, thus making this sacred ground, and a most appropriate location for a Missouri Civil War Museum, honoring our soldiers of the past and present.

Spent a little time at the Missouri Civil War Museum on a Sunday afternoon. Nice displays with interesting artifacts and several movies to share information about Jefferson Barracks and how integral it was to the Union efforts during the Civil War. They also have interesting displays pre and post Civil War. Plan to spend a couple hours.

Still loving this nice little peace of heaven right in the middle of the city! I love that the animals seem to be happy and well taken care of. There's a petting barn with signs above the "biters". Pet at your own risk, basically. lol YES there is a smell coming from the pig farm section but what do you expect from pigs? I had to write that in response to the reviews that seemed to criticize the smell. The pig sections were very clean, as far as pigs go. They just smell bad! I loved that Suson park allows people to come in and get the manure for free to use for their gardens! What a way to utilize that waste!
There are several ponds or lakes for fishing. One of them is specifically to be used for the 12 and under children. During certain parts of the year, one of the lakes is stocked with trout... something I found unusual because I thought trout could only survive in cold, fresh spring water? I found out that the trout are usually fished out pretty quickly. I asked a couple of fisherman there if the fishing was good and they said it's hit or miss but tended to be good. From the amount of fishermen there, this MUST be a good place to try. Some of the lakes (especially the main lake where people walk) was a little stagnant and dirty looking... the only reason I didn't give the park 5 stars. I'm not sure if the lakes aren't maintained as well as they used to be because of state cutbacks with parks? If so, this isn't the park's fault.
The barns are absolutely beautiful! I even observed a couple of people sitting with their traveling art supplies, painting and using pastels.
The playground equipment looks fantastic and there were a lot of kids there having a blast ... also adults! There are several picnic spots and pavilions for rent if you have large parties.

My daughter is getting married here in a few months. It is a gorgeous spot for any occasion. Just spend the time for a picnic here, you won't bbe disappointed.
