10 Things to Do in Ikaria That You Shouldn't Miss

March 6, 2018 Diedre Savory

Icaria, also spelled Ikaria (Greek: Ικαρία), is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, 10 nautical miles (19 km) southwest of Samos. According to tradition, it derives its name from Icarus, the son of Daedalus in Greek mythology, who was believed to have fallen into the sea nearby.

Seychelles Beach

It may be the best beach on Ikaria. The rock is impressive and the water is wonderful. Do not go in August. It is too crowded, you will not find any shade and will not enjoy the beauty of the beach.

Nas Beach

Reviewed By caratal - Adelaide, Australia

My son ran from armetitis to nas beach with the plan to meet us for a swim. When we arrived we wondered why he was not seated at the beach under an umberella. After the walk down the stairs we discovered why, he was a little shocked it was a nudist beach and as a 17 year old being at a nudist beach with your parents was a no go. On the plus side the water was beautiful, the view out to sea was lovely. Stair down steep and there is a rip so not a beach I would go to for swimming. Still worth the trip if you are not fazed by nudity.

We arrived just before tourist season and had a wonderful tour with our friendly guide Konstantinos, who was happy to speak about the the history and operation of the winery for as long as we had questions. The tasting portions were generous and the winery boasts some ancient and sophisticated varietals! Don't miss it!

Yaliskari Beach

Reviewed By Anastasia M - Larnaca, Cyprus

Yaliskari is a charming fishing village built within pines. It was the homeland of Michalis Kastanias who fought by the side of Lykourgos Logothetis from the island of Samos during the Greek Revolution in 1821.
The beach is one of the best on the island as it is surrounded by a thick pine forest and boasts crystal-clear waters. However, on a windy day, beware of the big waves, which can be very dangerous, especially if you aren't a strong swimmer. Very close-by, there is Messakti Beach - the island's most cosmopolitan beach and the largest sandy beach on Ikaria. Another beautiful sandy beach nearby is Livadil situated a few steps away from Armenisti.
If you happen to be in Yaliskari, I recommend visiting Mandria, Lapsahades, Kastanies and Christos. Just take the turning to the left from Yaliskari.

We would walk to this beach via Yaliskari beach from Armenisits. As it was drawing to the end of the season it was very quiet. The waves are a bit wild and I wouldn't swim alone there but its a great beach all round.

Monastery of Evaggelismos Mounde

Reviewed By Saltpilgrim - Paros, Greece
