Sterling Hill Mining Museum

Step Into Earth Science.... Come take a ¼ mile underground walking adventure into the 4th oldest mine in the country and the last working underground mine in NJ. Most everything man made has something to do with mining. At the Sterling Hill Mining Museum well show you just how it's done. From drilling and blasting to the processing of the ore, we’ve got it all! While on tour you will see a mining equipment history display, a drilling and blasting demonstration and the world famous fluorescent "Rainbow Tunnel" where everybody gets to take home a fluorescent mineral specimen. Right here in NJ is one of the world's richest zinc ore deposits, the area boasts over 350 minerals, about 70 of which fluoresce. That's about 10% of the known minerals in the world right here in NJ. As well as the richest fluorescent mineral deposit in the world. You can collect minerals from all over the world, including fluorescence, yourself 7 days a week when the museum is open.

This is a great field trip for earth science teachers. The mineral and rock collection is impressive and beautiful, the fluorescent rocks definitely were the best part. Our tour guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and funny. However, the beginning of the tour was a bit long and dry to keep my 6 year old stepson's attention. I also do not think strollers should be allowed on the tour, it's very dark at times and I got bumped and rolled over several times.

Great for rock fanatics and anyone interested in rocks and mining. It's a small place but there is so much to see! The fluorescent room is amazing and is surely the highlight. The mine replica was interesting as well. We went down to the rock field and picked out some cool rocks to take home which was lots of fun. The staff here are super friendly. Stopped here on the way to the Delaware Water Gap.

Ventimigilia Vineyard

Reviewed By Leatonmb - Northern, NJ

Most NJ wines are fruity and sweet, well Ventimiglia wines are truly the exception. If you like well balanced, mature and re-fined wines then you will truly appreciate Ventimiglia Wines. They have a wonderful mouth feel, giving you a lovely finish. Gene the wine maker is truly a magician at blending wines, ensuring that each varietal that is added to the blend improves the overall balance of the blend.

The winery is located in a beautiful part of NJ, in Sussex county. It is a lovely drive, and a perfect location for a picnic. although there are some restaurants about 15 min away. Visiting the winery is like visiting a dear friends house, because Gene is so gracious. His knowledge of wine making is impressive, and he is clearly passionate about wine making and his wines. There are also two other wineries in sussex county if you want to make a day of it

I have had many Cabernet franc wines from NJ and have never found one I liked, but His Cabernet Franc is outstanding, Medium body with some light fruit and just enough tannins to make it a pleasure to drink,. If you like an old school full bodied blend then the Fratelli blend is for you, with cab fran, cab sav, and merlot. Now i like whites but am often disappointed with NJ whites, either they are really sweet or have no body. This is not the case with gene's whites, his chardonnay is the perfect summer white, nice medium body, not overwhelming oak and just enough brightness to make you take notice. The winery was featured at the 2010 crystal spring food and wine festival, take a look

Stairway to Heaven Trail

Reviewed By Gary M

My Girlfriend and I have wanted to do this hike for a while now and finally got a chance to do it yesterday. The view from the top was amazing, and we were able to see the High Point monument in the distance. Plenty of places to sit and eat lunch when you are up top.
For starters we did the whole trail and by that I mean we parked on Rt 517 and started on the boardwalk. In my opinion you are better off just parking at the Rt 94 parking lot and heading up the mountain, your not missing much. I GPS tracked our walk from the starting point to the top of the mountain and it was roughly 4 miles one way with an elevation gain of 1007'. Not doing the boardwalk portion would easily cut almost 2 miles out which would save your legs for scrambling up the mountain. It was a beautiful view from the top, well worth the hike. Not as good as Mt. Tammany on the NJ/PA border or Breakneck Ridge in NY state but still a great hike nonetheless.

This old historic Mill houses wonderful antique shops. Some shops were like museums with rare and unique items. Found many great bargains with shop owners very cordial and willing to negotiate prices. Fell in love with the architechure of this old mill. Got to meet the owners of the complex. They were very hospitable and I enjoyed talking to them about the history of the mill and the immediate area. Their shop Bogwater Jim Antiques and Worthies has wonderful items displayed and carefully curated to please the eye of savy shoppers. Be sure to visit the last room of their shop with it's lofty ceiling housing among many things, beautiful antique models of sailboats and yachts. I could live in that room. Be sure to stop at the Millside Cafe in the complex for a delicious meal and home made pie before you leave!

The Christmas Light display at Skylands Stadium is colorful with varied displays. The attendants were friendly and offered advice in regard to the drive through display. Only negative is the rough road in the parking lot which you follow throughout the display. The road seemed like a testing ground for car shocks. Would be nice if they offered to let you drive through a second time so you could concentrate on the displays and not just the road.
