Gravina Sotterranea

In 2005 a group of speleologues leaded by Mr Michele Parisi, discovers and makes know to people tunnels, cisterns, aqueducts, cells, rocky churches, barns, old furnaces hidden in meanders placed under the city centre. In this suggestive world they discovered great towers and ruins of old city walls. It is very interesting to admire the historical cells of the Ducal Palace (the house in which pope Benedict XIII was born), the cell placed under the seat of Gravina Souterrain, the cells of Amato Palace.

Excellent tour of caves and underground cisterns in Gravina. The caves are amazing and there was such a sense of adventure! It was very interesting to understand how people extracted their building material and lived in previous centuries. The guides were knowledgeable and explained historical, geological and engineering matters very clearly. They really go beyond the call of duty. Definitely one of the highlights of my recent trip to Puglia. Strongly recommended.

pretty much another beautiful church with beautiful interior. However you get a great view of the ancient early abodes of the earliest people to inhabit Gravina. The deep ravine where caves and dug out rock homes served as their homes, gives pause to think of how difficult life was in those days.

We took the 1h40 min tour, which was guided. The group was only with Italians (good that we understand this quite good). I don't know if they give the same tour in English, but I suppose. Some particular facts to learn...

Museo Fondazione Ettore Pomarici Santomasi

We stumbled upon this museum while exploring Gravina in Puglia. It was only a couple of euro admittance I think, and a lovely young woman took us on a tour of the various rooms and floors. She rattled off a lot of facts and kept us moving really fast. We thought that she was just giving us an overview, so that we'd know what was what, and that we would then go though at our leisure - there were collections of coins and guns and paintings worthy of a more detailed look. We finished up at the frescoes luckily removed from an about-to-be-demolished church, and then found outselves being farewelled and ushered out the door! I think we were in there less than half an hour!
I think it was quite an interesting little museum, just be aware if you go, to ask them to slow down the tour so you get to see everything properly.

There's much more than a natual park here. Before my visit in the Murgia region I didn't make any differences inside the part of Puglia corresponding to the province of Bari. Then I discovered that through the many characters inside Puglia there's a murgian one unmistakable, poetically made of wide green and wheat yellow spaces, gentle hills making everyone to think there's no world behind this amazing scenography of wonderfully smelling foods, appreciable and mannered people, ancient walls of cathedrals and villages and spectacular ravines.
I'm honest I litterally felt in love with these places in which I litterally felt in love.

Cripta Santuario Madonna della Stella

Located on the western ridge of the Torrent "gravina", between the archeological sites of the Eternal Father and Petra Magna (or Botromagno), in the rocky landscape Gravina, it is a charming complex in which seem to merge, in a harmonious synthesis of sound and vision, the sacred and the profane . Primary site, perhaps, of pagan cults as a show animal figures carved masks apotropaic and signs disappeared, then went to the Benedictine monks, marks the most ancient symbol of Marian devotion as suggested sources uncertain and a modern image of the Virgin that would replace a more ancient lost. A rectangular plan clearly emphasizes the following reconstruction of the Baroque period. All around peace and serenity, interrupted occasionally by the murmur of the brook, renew the magic of an ancient myth.
