Gävle [ˈjɛːvlɛ] is a city in Sweden, the seat of Gävle Municipality and the capital of Gävleborg County. It had 99,576 inhabitants in September 2016, which makes it the 13th most populated city in Sweden. It is the oldest city in the historical Norrland (Sweden's Northern Lands), having received its charter in 1446 from Christopher of Bavaria. However, Gävle is far nearer the greater Stockholm region than it is to the other major settlements in Norrland.

We were staying overnight and decided to start the day with a walk in the park. What a lovely place to visit with the river running through and paths alongside made walking very easy and enjoyable. Great place right in the centre of the city. Information boards as you walk along with details in Swedish and English which was very helpful.

A good place to visit for all ages.
Sweden's largest collection of steam locomotives nicely presented.
Kids will enjoy seeing these and also a small farm house (allergy-safe wooden natural sized cows, pig and hen).
If you're in luck, take a ride with the miniature train that's located in a beautiful area of the park.

Experience prison conditions of the past in two unique prison buildings. Follow history from the old castle jail with its underground dungeons, dating back to the mid-1600s, to one of Sweden’s first penitentiaries, dating from 1847. You will witness the Swedish prison system, which developed from a period of public enforced shame and corporal punishment to a time when prisoners were isolated from society in what we now call solitary confinement. A visit to the Prison Museum leaves no one unaffected. When you visit the museum, borrow an audioguide in english or german for free!
The museum consists of two buildings, one displaying older and the other one more recent prison history. To my understanding, both buildings are authentic prisons; you can see how the prisons actually looked like, and how the prisoners lived in them. The Exhibitions are rather small, however; if you don't want to listen to an audio guide, it takes barely 30 minutes to go through both of them.

After visiting Kolmården Furuvik feels kind of small. The entrence fee does not include any rides so in the end you will pay as much as at Kolmården or even any Disney park in the world for a much smaller park with fewer attractions

The Gavle Symphony Orchestra is one of Sweden's oldest symphony orchestras founded in 1912. And indeed one of Sweden's best orchestras. The municipal authorities made it difficult for them to find a "home" for their great Performances, but finally the Concert house was built in 1998, 76 years after their establishment. A shame of course, but the final building result do the orchestra justice. Great concert hall with lovely acoustics. Ample common space with plenty of gathering areas, bar and a fine restaurant. Do hear this orchestra live in this for symphonical music appropriate space - great experience! I've reviewed the restaurant "Gourmet Blå" separately.

This place has activity in all seasons. You can run, cycle, horse ride or walk various tracks from 2km to 10km. They range from pram friendly to serious trails. In winter weather they have a small downhill ski slope, sledging, mini ice rink and cross country tracks.
Aside from the exercise (I forgot to mention the mini outdoor gym with Fred Flintstone-style weights) there is a really reasonable restaurant, BBQ pits (supplied wit wood) along the trails, a few kiddy areas and even a sauna.
The parking and most of the activity is free. You can rent some equipment if needed.
I love it here and think it's probably the best thing about Gavle :)

If you ever wanted to get a closer look at the largest animal of the northern Forests this is a good place to go to. Guided tours during the spring/summer takes you close to the semi-wild mooses that are held in this large park. English and german spoken. Cafe and giftshop, cottages for staying overnight.
