Fort Smith National Historic Site

We visited the Fort Smith historical site today. It was very interesting to go into the historic buildings and see the old jail were they kept prisoners (76 of which were hanged on the nearby gallows) and the old courtroom were many were tried and sentenced. The grounds, buildings and exhibits all have signs explaining each item in detail. When you walk through and around the buildings and grounds it is easy to imagine what must have been like to be here in the 1800’s.

Miss Laura's Visitor Center

Our Visitor Center, "Miss Laura's Social Club," is located inside of Fort Smith's historic downtown area and sits alongside the Arkansas River. Out of seven "row houses" that lined Fort Smith's Old West red light district, Miss Laura's is the only house of ill-repute that stood the test of time. Now, it is the only former bordello on the National Register of Historic Places, and it has been fully restored to its original grandeur. Make Miss Laura's your first stop and we’ll give you a tour of this Victorian mansion that has become a prominent symbol of this once boisterous border town's very colorful past!

Fort Smith National Cemetery

This is the third National Cemetery that I have visited. Every one of them brings tearful reflections for the brave soldiers who gave our nation the freedom we all enjoy! To see all the headstones reading “unknown soldier” is a somber reflection that somewhere a family will never know where their loved one lays at rest. Gratitude
