Built in the year one thousand, it was originally a military fortress before being transformed into the home of the illustrious Counts of Foix such as Gaston Fébus, author of the 'Livre de la Chasse' (Book of the Hunt) among other works, and Henri IV who became King of France. It now houses the Ariège département museum: the bed of Henri IV is on display. The castle's various rooms are dedicated to the art of building in the Middle Ages, the history of the castle and of the Counts of Foix, as well as temporary exhibitions.
