Shorter Mansion

Reviewed By redundantecho - Deltona, Fl

The main street & surrounding homes are lovely, but unfortunately, in the 1960's, someone purchased the house next door & put in an apartment complex & parking lot. Much to the dismay of many citizens & one lady in particular, enough money was raised to buy the Shorter Mansion. All the original furnishings are gone, but many wonderful people donated items belonging to that time period.
There was to be wedding that evening & it was decorated beautifully with white linens, salmon pink silk table runners & matching bows tied to each chair. It was dinner for 80 guests & all rooms had the beautiful settings. Each place setting had a copper charger waiting for white China. All the silver punch bowls, etc. we're ready to be filled. It was like walking onto a movie set. We felt fortunate to see the set-up.
After walking thru the many downstairs rooms with its lovely columns, Greek ceiling moldings, & multiple fireplaces, we went up to the 2nd floor, which is dedicated to being a museum. There are many artifacts from the Civil War & WW1, American Indian artifacts, & a room dedicated to governors from the county. I recommend taking the extra time to walk around this area.

We went to the park while in the area for the evacuation. There's a wildlife refuge in the area that was a nice treat. It's about 12 miles around. The marina part of the park is pretty also. They have cottages that can be rented....MoreThank you so much for your kind words about Lakepoint State Park. We hope you had minimal damage with Irma, and maybe you can come back and visit under better circumstance.

Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge

Reviewed By nicolediane - Atlanta, Georgia

We picked up a map of the wildlife drive at the visitor center. There are many different types of land which attracts lots of different birds. There are woodlands, old fields, grasslands, open water and marshland. There are places to stop and get out. Don't forget the binoculars. It is a gravel/dirt road. We got out of the car at a place called the Goose Pen. Saw a huge gator, 10 feet in the water. We stayed in the car. Also got out at a a viewing platform and an observation tower. The drive is in the Alabama section. There is also a section in Georgia. The walking trail in the Alabama section was closed. Ww did walk along a levy in a section in Georgia. The person at the visitor center told us to park at the gate without blocking it and walk in. It was like a levy and swampy on both sides. We saw a small gator trying to get a duck and went back to the car. On the drive we saw several different kinds of ducks, a couple herons and egrets and hawks. The office is only open during the week.

Fairview Cemetery

Reviewed By TiltedKilt2013 - Panama City Beach, Florida

Old Fairview Cemetery is the go-to place for history or ancestory enthusiasts who want to research more about the historical figures and family members who shaped Eufaula as it is today. Notable families, such as the Shorters, Comers, etc. are buried here. Filled with incredible, huge marble statues and headstones representing the work of Italian stone cutters.

Located on a bulff overlooking the river, it is a great place to reflect, enjoy nature and the gardens the people of Eufaula have carefully nurtured for all to enjoy. Me and my familiy all personally encountered a ghostly apparition on a visit there, so a great for you ghost hunters...just don't go at dusk, when they are most active.
