Jordan River

This Antrim County river has been protected by the state of Michigan since 1970.

My family and I had a wonderful time paddling down this beautiful river. We rented tubes, kayaks and a raft from Jordan River Outfitters in East Jordan. (New owners since 2015) Two of the kids in tubes, 8 and 13, laughed the whole way during our 2 hour trip. Older kids and adults were in kayaks, while 5 adults were in a raft. The river can be tricky, with some tight places with fallen trees, but all manageable. As we drifted down through a canopy of cedars-even spotting an otter in the water- my daughter asked if the trip could become a new family tradition. We plan on returning!

Well, it used to be kind of dirty and mostly fun. Now it's just dirty and disappointing. We visited again this past weekend. The kids' pool area was very cold because the water heater was broken. The front desk was aware of this problem, but when we paid for our tickets at 4pm (to do the evening only) and they saw we had TWO children, I think it would have been the ethical and moral thing to tell us that a huge part of our visit would not be possible. Unfortunately, no one told us, and we paid.

I immediately asked a lifeguard if the heater was broken in the kids' pool area. She said she didn't know and would ask her manager. After a while, I asked her what was happening with the pool. She said she still hadn't talked to her manager. The lifeguards are always rotating, so the next lifeguard came around and I asked him. He said he couldn't speak much English...so, I went to the front desk. They instantly told me they knew the heater was broken. (Ummm...that would have been good information 30 minutes ago). I asked them if they were going to fix it, and I was told it would be fixed.

The kids played and had fun, as kids do. We noticed that many of the water features were no longer in working condition. Spray guns don't spray or twist as they should, etc. The locke facility in general was dirty. The facility was also very cold in certain areas. It wasn't a warm 84 degrees throughout as advertised. By the time we left at 7, the kids' pool was still broken and cold. We kept hoping the pool heater was going to be fixed. No one offered an apology, let alone a refund.

In all, we were discouraged with this visit. When you are skiing at Boyne, Avalanche Bay is convenient and they know they have a captive audience. I think we'll be heading to Schuss Mountain next year for a change of scenery.

Castle Farms

Open year round, Castle Farms is one of Northern Michigan's top historic attractions, as well as one of the Midwest's premier wedding venues. Visitors can stroll throughout the magnificent stone buildings dating back to 1918, and enjoy gorgeous gardens. A variety of museum quality collections featuring castles, antique toys, and royalty memorabilia from around the world are displayed throughout the buildings. The Castle's 1918 Museum showcases items from that time era, plus World War I memorabilia. Children delight in feeding the huge rainbow trout swimming in the Reflection Pond, playing a game of giant chess, or hide-and-seek with the fairies and gnomes dwelling in the Enchanted Forest. Our Self-Guided Tours offer Scavenger Hunt tours for children, too! Everyone loves The Castle's Garden Railroad; with more than 1/2 mile of track and 68 G-scale trains, it's one of the largest in the State. Listed on both the National and State Historic Registries, Castle Farms is a world-class historic property where old world charm and modern-day elegance enchant visitors of all ages.

I have lived in Michigan for over 30 years and been to Charlevoix several times, but I had never heard of the Castle Farm. It's right on Route 66 just outside the city. In 1918, the acting president of Sears decided to build a Tuscan-style castle on the property he bought to test farm equipment sold in the Sears catalog. It is immense and beautiful and the lower floor and the grounds can be visited in a self-guided tour. The field from the farm's baseball team is still there. The castle was sold some time ago and became a venue for concerts--about every name you can think of played their to huge crowds. Then, it came up for auction and the woman who had wanted it for years bought it and completely restored it with gardens and fountains and rooms galore which contain all sorts of antique memoribila collections, including everything she has been able to find from the 1918 Sears catalog. A dragon from Grand Rapids Art Prize was purchased for the grounds. It was a nice fall day and we were able to spend a couple of leisurely hours looking around. There are probably a dozen rooms set up for events, like wedding receptions, so the original decor is not evident, but there is still much to see.

We spent 1 night here on Site 228. Close to restroom and showers. Short walk to beautiful beach with spectacular sunset! Water is very warm and the beach Sandy.

Great beach for young kids! We took turns batting soft balls into the water from the beach with 4 retrieving them. Great exercise!

The sunset was super even though it was slightly cloudy on the horizon. Nice quiet fire with Smores around a kid safe fire pit. I would stay here over park on Lake Michigan if it is a little windy or cooler.

Beautiful state park! Don't think it is any.less beautiful than Petoskey state park.

It was something nearby to do on a rainy day. The most interesting part were the reptiles. The kids and adults both enjoyed the short tutorials and up close interaction. The discovery room was pretty neat. We enjoyed playing the English game "Skittles". The one room schoolhouse was cool to check out, as was the tree house.

Jordan Valley Outfitters

A group of 8 of us went (4 adults/4 kids-ages: 12,10,8 & 5). We opted for the beginner/novice, 1 hour trip. It was anything but novice... NUMEROUS down trees that were very difficult to navigate around due to the river running rather swiftly. Four of us got off at our drop point, the other four were informed by the employee that dropped us off, that if they wanted to continue on, it would only be an additional 20 minutes to kayak back to the outfitter.... WRONG!!... approx. an hour & a half later, our remaining four returned. If you're an experienced kayaker, you would probably have no issue, but considering most of us were beginners, it was not enjoyable.
