Doze Profetas De Aleijadinho

Reviewed By Annex_BR - Brazil

One of the most famous Brazilian sculptors, Aleijadinho carved the 12 prophets in soapstone, and they are still today as great as they were then. One of the country's most recognized works of art!
Also, the chapels with statues depicting the Via Crucis are a must see.

Bom Jesus do Congonhas

Built in the 18th century, the church is renowned for its rococo interior.

If a tourist travels to Congonhas in Minas Gerais it will be not for the rather unattractive town, but for its 'Santuario de Bom Jesus de Matozinhos', a popular pilgrimage site, which consists of basically three elements: a Basilica, the Twelve Prophets by Aleijandrinho and the six Calvary Chapels.
The veneration of 'Bom Jesus de Matosinhos' is a typical old Portuguese phenomenon, which became especially popular in its colonies. By legend it refers to an icon of the crucified Christ, which had landed onto the Beaches of the village of Matozinhos in Northern Portugal in the 2nd century AD.
The church was not open for visitors, when I was there, but the main reason I had come here, were anyway the twelve sculptures by Aleijadinho in front of the church. Before going there I saw a room full of votive offerings and dedications next to the church, which showed how much this place is still a pilgrimage site.

Museu de Congonhas

This is a rather unusual museum of art in the Minas Historic Tour, comprising modern art Exhibitions like Burle Marx paintings and self portraits, a primitive flat religious art collection, a terrific display of tools and instruments for religious art carvings and church ceiling paintings. You can’t miss the ex/voto exhibition, since you’re in destination of so many miracles!
Just an amazing museu featuring an amazing building!

Capelas dos Passos da Paixao de Cristo

Reviewed By saronic - Zurich, Switzerland

Walking down from the Basilica de Bom Jesus past the marvelous sculptures in soapstone of the twelve prophets one will come to the six chapels dedicated to the passion of Christ. As the stone figures near the staircarse of the basilica the sculptures inside the closed chapels, made of wood, they are also the work - according to tradition - of Brazil's most famous Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho.
The sculptures can only be seen through openings at each chapel. In total the six chapels, going downhill from the church in a zigzagging way refer to the themes: Last Supper - The Garden of Olives - Arrest of Jesus - Mocking of Jesus - Carrying the Cross - Crucificion.
There are some very expressive depictions of Jesu's suffering, but also bizarre caricatures of all the 'bad guys': dumb, ugly faces, often dwarfs and with two left feet. The colours on the figures, originally from the end of the 18th century, are still there, as there have been some restorations in later times.

Infelizmente o acesso ao museu não foi possível, mas poder passear pela grande construção e sua área externa foi bem gratificante.
