Having "camped" in the "bottom" of the lake as a child (while my father, a logger, felled the trees to clear for the lake), it was very interesting as to the changes. We didn't do the drive around the lake due to the rough gravel road but the back of Mt. Baker was outstanding. Going into the dam area was something else. So many people enjoying the camp area and the boat launch...Things do change after 55 years.

This whole side trip should be rated "expert" and some parts "just plain crazy".
Okay, maybe it's not that bad but it sure isn't for the faint of heart. The 7 miles of narrow dirt logging road, that gains 4,000' in elevation, suffers from a severe lack of places to pull over if you meet another car ... so just hope you don't!! Seriously. The road, which demands your respect, is in reasonably good shape considering except for the last few hundred yards which is just a steep washed-out jeep track. I couldn't make it to the parking area. Leave your RV, MiniVan, or family car at home for this one. I drove up in my 2008 Mustang but I really didn't enjoy it; I recommend a SMALL 4-wheel drive vehicle.
As far as the hike goes: it is steep and strenuous but not a killer. Definitely not an outing for the day-tripper and family from suburbia that get exhausted at the mall.
The views are great so don't forget your camera!

The title says it all. Set in an old-growth forest, the park offers just 40ish campsites, some of which are multis, and a separate group campground area. Most are pretty level, and easy back-ins even for long rigs. Some have hookups. Very secluded and quiet, and though none of the sites are on the Skagit river, the river is a short, easy walk for all to enjoy.

Anyone seeking to experience real flight along with scenic splendor will be well advised to seek out this fine "mom and pop" flying sightseeing company. Wayne conducted a truly unforgettable flight down river valleys and across spectacular forested hills all near the beautiful little airport in Concrete Washington. Wayne and his charming spouse made it easy, comfortable and surprisingly affordable to experience flight in the legendary Super Cub, and believe me, Wayne really knows what to do with an airplane. Pilots will be delighted and the rest will be startled at the close-up beauty revealed. Check these folks out and find a real adventure. I can hardly wait to go flying with them again.

This museum is another delightful surprise in Concrete!! The planes are in excellent condition and have the history written up next to the plane. They have some unusual and rare planes in this collection. At $5, it is worth a stop when passing through.

Mostly hard packed and gravel. Very level, no hills. Have to cross the highway once and over a bridge with a very narrow side walk so watch out for the huge logging trucks that won't stop for you. The biggest watch-out for is the horse droppings through out the trails.

In Rockport State park you'll be enchanted by the lush rainforest here, but the view was overgrown by trees on the bank of the Skagit many years ago. There are trails on both sides of Highway 20 in Rockport State Park that is a treasure in the upper Skagit valley. Buy a Discovery Pass to park in the State Parks, DNR and Wildlife areas throughout Washington to keep our State Parks funded and open.

Very nice little winery located about 3 miles west of Concrete.
The tasting room is snug and cozy. With a reasonable selection of wines to try. Some of the wines are better than others ... so give them all a shot. :-)
The vineyards and grounds are immaculately well kept and clean, which makes for a nice visit. Picnic facilities are available. Overnight camping above the vineyard is also an option for a modest fee.
Most impressive is the fact that the owners are very strong supporters of the local area. Many local events are sponsored by the winery.
Hours are rather variable during the "off-season" so call ahead if planning for a winter visit.
