Cherating River

Reviewed By Priti C - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The river cruise was 1.5hrs. We were made to sit in a small boat with life jackets. The water was very murky but could really feel and see the mangroves up and close. The guide showed us the black mangrove snake and the monitor lizard very closely. It was good to see their animals in their natural habitat. I was really scared and thought what if they jump in our boat. But fortunately that never happened. We booked the tour through Hafiz activities something like that which costed us RM 35pp. Overall nice to experience nature at its best

This is a completely different firefly experience compared to anything you would have seen before. Hafiz is extremely passionate about his job, and has done plenty of research and study into the behavioral patterns of fireflies. The moment he starts signaling with his special flashlight, the fireflies swamp the boats miraculously! A must-see in Cherating.

Cherating Beach

Reviewed By masterkeith - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

This beach used to be a highly popular stopover point for backpackers making their way to the Perhentians or Redang Island further up north. However with the introduction of cheap direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu the backpacker and foreign tourist scene has certainly faded away in recent years. It has nevertheless gotten more popular with domestic tourists and resorts around the area have re-invented themselves to cater for this demand. The beach is quite a wide span of sand stretched over a long bay area. What spoils it are the tourist buggy vehicles that roam the beach which destroys the sand into a mushy and messy patch leaving their trail marks behind. It also destroys the supposed serenity of the seaside with noise pollution and air pollution generated from the exhaust smoke not to mention posing a safety hazard and potentially colliding into people walking on the beach. What draws tourist to the beach is that the Cherating bay is one on the few Beaches in Malaysia that is good and safe to surf. Tourism has certain done a lot to bring opportunities to the local folk but uncontrolled tourism will certainly do more harm than good in the long term.

Small smelly pools for the turtles, we felt uncomfortable there and only stayed around 15 minutes. Coming from NZ we are used to seeing captive animals in better conditions.

We had a wonderful day learning to make Batiks. The family that run Limbong Art are delightful and extremely helpful and patient. They gave us helpful advice and encouragement and it was lovely learning about the diiferent stages to this process which they were keen to share with us. We were all really pleased with the end result. It was one of the best experiences we had in Cherating.

Just like other beach, this place is good for family picnic or gathering. Enjoy the scenery, the beach, playing with sand, swimming and other outdoor activities. Usually crowded during holidays but happening is great. Lots of great restaurant around here so hungry is not a choice. Try looking for the best recipe of #patin #tempoyak and #sambalhitam lazat but couldn't find.

His website (google it) has the latest pictures of his current batch of Surfing guests and has various packages to cater for most budgets from aircon chalets right on the beach all the way to budget rooms at his guest house which includes 3 surf lessons and 2 nights stay. Most but the lowest packages include breakfast at the Ombak cafe which is located down the road next to the "Don't tell mama restaurant". They also offer rental of just the board for a full day or half the day. They also offer lessons only packages for small groups which includes the board rental. Satusuku Surf

Satusuku Surf School is the only surf school in Malaysia with certified instructors and lies in the heart of Cherating, a small village on the east coast of Malaysia, not far from Kuantan. During the monsoon season, Cherating and its surrounding breaks see waves of world class quality and astonishing consistency, with everything a surfer needs: from perfect cylindrical sand-bottom point breaks for the skilled surfer to mellow easy rolling waves that break for over a kilometer – perfect for long boarders and beginners. Just a few minutes up the coast lie several more secret spots, known only to the local scene and on the right days, matching anything Indo can throw. The surf scene in Malaysia is barely known outside of the country, meaning Cherating can offer first-class waves with none of the crowds associated with the more famous spots. We provide Surf lessons, Surfboard rental, accommodation and packages...for more info, please e-mail us

Spent the weekend learning to surf at Satusuku surf school, was great experience and most importantly good instructors. My friend had the misfortune of going to a different surf school that was not officially qualified and tho he had fun, it was not the same experience. Will be back again!

Kamsurf

Reviewed By nicolasf719

Kamsurf is a good simple place to chill in Cherating with a nice deck to enjoy the sea view.
Unfortunately, the staff and mostly the blond girl behind the bar, is really rude. She makes you feel you are bothering her each time you ask for something.
For example, I wanted to through away some rubbish and after simply asking where it was possible to do it, she briefly indicated the bean and told me that she won't do it for me.
Because of her, I won't recommend that place. This girl literally kills the vibe of the place.
