This winery was one on our Hunter Valley wine tour. It stood out because of Lesley, the informative and friendly staff person who took us through the wine tasting. The winery is beautifully located in Hunter Valley with a wine tasting room that is cozy and efficient. Our group was thirteen people, one of which was a small child. In spite of the potential distraction of the child, Lesley handled the tasting and the education of the tour group with professional aplomb. The wines were interesting and ranged widely in type and taste.

We visited this zoo on Sunday afternoon, and had pre-booked the 3.15 pm Meerkat Experience. We arrived around 1pm and had brought our own lunch, they do have a small souvenier shop/kiosk with some sandwiches available. We took a leisurely stroll around the zoo, enjoying the cheetah talk and catching a few other 'talks' and also asked random questions of the Zoo people who happened to be feeding the animals, all were very informative ... but the best bit was the MEERKAT experience. They have recently had a litter of pups, so there were five tiny meerkats in there as well as the adult ones, and as soon as you sit down with your bowls of food, they are all over you ... and for the next amazing twenty minutes, you are interracting with them, they are climbing onto your shoulder, jumping from one person to the next, climbing up your legs etc ... they are very sweet creatures, and although you cannot pick them up, you are allowed to touch them as they are feeding etc. My dad has limited mobility, but was able to negotiate the three steps up into the enclosure, and they provided a plastic chair for him to sit on, otherwise the best place to sit is down on the ground with the meerkats ...
will definitely be back to do this again one day ... so worth it

Our Cellar Door is located two and half hours north of Sydney and is open 7 days a week. Offering the full spectrum of wine tasting and sales, we are recognised for our long history in the region and our well established wine club (find out more here). We have recently appointmented Gwyn Olsen as our new Chief Winemaker, a rising star of the wine industry. Gwyn studied Oenology at Roseworthy University in Adelaide, graduating in 2005, completing her first vintage in France, with a further six in New Zealand, and three in the Hunter Valley. She has recently joined an elite group of winemakers after being named DUX of the Australian Wine Research Institute, Advanced Wine Assessment Course 2012. Gwyn also joins the talents of Living Legend 'Karl Stockhausen', a winemaker with over 50 years of experience in producing iconic Hunter Valley wines. We take huge in acknowledging Karl's success by showcasing a range under our brand which typify traditional Hunter Styles; the Karl Stockhausen Signature range includes styles such as Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz. In 2007, Karl was officially made a 'Living Legend' one of the six inaugural recipients of the Hunter Living Legends Awards. Briar Ridge is primarily a Cellar Door and online operation, although our wines are distributed to key independent retail outlets as well as on premise venues across NSW.

We (4 of us) started the day of tasting here in a lovely setting. As we were the only ones at the vineyard the young man started pouring wines that were not on the tasting list as they had "already been opened". We of course tried what was offered and at no time was there mentioned there would be a charge. He did mention after the tasting that there is "normally a charge " for some of these wines. I purchased a bottle and my friends didn't like any they tasted enough to buy a bottle. As we were leaving the young man "turned" on my friend saying in a very aggressive & loud tone (& in front of people who had arrived by then) "you're leaving without a bottle & I didn't even charge you the tasting fee". It was a very hard sell that made the experience a very poor one. I am a friend of Briar Ridge & have been there many times taking many friends, but was embarrassed by the treatment that was directed at my friend. It was such a shame, and such poor public relations/marketing.

The golf was great. Fun course - challenging but also with a little room to move. Can't really remember hitting the same shot twice, which is the mark of a good game. Big greens make scoring tough.
The 19th hole was nothing spectacular.
Will definitely be back for the golf. Loved it.
