Good selection of shops but in the bad weather and winter time it not as nice as an indoor shopping center. It is missing Karstad and some of the shops are quite small. Indoor foodcourt with different style restaurants. Clean and free toilets. Lots of parking space. Saturday is a rush. Day time Friday was very good time to visit!

This is one of the finest pieces of industrial heritage in the German Ruhr-area. The lift itself is the highlight. From the higher parts one gets a nice view over the environment. In additional buildings one can see Exhibitions with steam engines and about the history of the ship lift, and about a number of shipwrecks (not sure whether the latter is permanent). One can also visit a museum ship. There are buses coming here, but it's not the easiest place to reach by public transport.

Well, since this is the largest stock-pile in Europe the ride by bike upwards through the serpentine-routs shouldn't be to easy. Huge views over the landscape, pretty nice stuff at top. The obelisk was a bit smaller than expected though. Cool that the pile is still growing! Large machines came all time loaded with.. pile material.

Cranger Kirmes

Germany's second-biggest funfair after Oktoberfest, Cranger Kirmes in Hernes stands out its focus on carnival attractions rather than beer consumption. The festival does provide a giant beer tent, but the main draw remains the 500-odd showmen and their roller coasters, ghost trains, games, and curios spread out over an 111,000-square-meter space. Originally founded in the 15th century as a horse market, Cranger Kirmes soon evolved into an entertainment event replete with jugglers and magicians. Today, the colorful funfair welcomes about 4 million visitors over 10 days starting the first Friday of August.

If you do like fun fairs then you should definitely go. But don´t think it is a good idea to go by car. You should really take public Transportation opportunities (they have Special busses) because parking possibilities are limited and maybe expensive.
You can find a lot of nice offers to eat and drink, do lottery, Shooting stands, rollercoaster and amusment houses (mirror house, Horror house and so on). Also a lot of sales boths offer textiles, bags, kitchen & household products.

The botanical garden has been a refreshing companion at the time of my studies in Bochum. There is not a particular spot I would recommend. Just walking around down the hill to the lake is beautiful. There are many signs to illustrate the plants and recently Q codes have been added to access online material about the place.
