Camogli - San Rocco - Punta Chiappa Trail

We accidentally stumbled across this hike one afternoon and I'm so glad we did. Straight out of Camogli, it's a gentle climb to the beautiful San Rocco church, then a lovely coastal walk the rest of the way to Punta Chiappa with beautiful views. We then caught the boat back to Camogli from Porto Piddochio.

We went to Recco for the day and we did not see this attraction, in fact our experience Recco is just a sleepy hollow. On the day we were there no one was in the water and the beach area seemed to be closed. Maybe things are different here, since we live near Newquay Cornwall where the surf is used all year round.

Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino

The Promontory of Portofino, the most northern protected coastal area of the western Mediterranean, shows scenery and landscapes amongst the most famous in the world. Formed by giant conglomerate deposits overlying limestone banks, mainly of marl, it has geomorphologic and microclimatic characteristics which provide, in a limited territory, an extremely varied environment. Within short distances, we can find the cool Forests of the northern mountainside and nearby the sunny cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean world, from the civilization of chestnut to the olive one, from the peasant traditions to the sea and the fishing traditional industry. The Park of Portofino has been a protected area since 1935 and it hosts one of the largest concentrations of flora of the Mediterranean, a large variety of birds and invertebrates as well as important historical and architectural treasures such as the abbeys of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte and San Gerolamo della Cervara. A network of over 80 km of trails allows walking and hiking excursions of various lengths and difficulty, with the opportunity to enjoy the peculiarities of the whole area in the best way possible.

Portofino looks like a postcard. There are a lot of tourists, and cruise lines like to drop their share there, but that's what to expect when you go to a top tourist destination. Good restaurants and hotels. Great sight with places to walk to and historic sights that the glitterati favor.

This trip came highly recommended by a friend of mine who had done it a few months earlier - I had anticipated the excursion would differ slightly simply by having different guides and a larger group ... but the actual experience was quite a bit different than we had expected or hoped for. The trip began with us waiting over an hour for the other half of our group. Although we were told that a group of this size could split into two groups, we instead paddled in the Monterosso harbor for nearly 75 minutes, wasting time until the other participants showed up. Once they finally did, the excursion felt rushed and more of an athletic event, definitely not the promised "site seeing tour providing unique opportunities to view the coastline from the water". We didn't stop at a single cave or grotto on our way up the coast. I'm also young and fit but it took everything I could just to keep up with the guides ... which meant no real time or opportunity to simply enjoy the views. We were also told there would be a chance we wouldn't get to snorkel if the rest of the group didn't want to - which, while I get fundamentally, the trip is described as kayak + snorkel so that was a bit misleading. We did stop at a small beach accessible only by boat so that was nice but the time was limited and the snorkeling was disappointing. After a short lunch, we then kicked off the athletic event again to rush back to Monterosso (this time at least stopping at one cave for a few minutes). While I honestly I had no real interest in continuing, it was quite frustrating to know we not only left more than an hour after our scheduled start time ... but we returned nearly 30 minutes early. Would've preferred to rent our own kayaks from vendors any day.
