Calumet (/ˌkæljuːˈmɛt/ KAL-yoo-MET) is a village in Calumet Township, Houghton County, in the U.S. state of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, that was once at the center of the mining industry of the Upper Peninsula. Also known as Red Jacket, the village includes the Calumet Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The village may itself be included within the Calumet Historic District, a larger area which is NRHP-listed and which is a National Historic Landmark District. It is bordered on the north by Calumet Township, on the south by the unincorporated town of New Town and Blue Jacket, on the east by Blue Jacket and Calumet Township, and on the west by Yellow Jacket and Calumet Township. The population was 726 at the 2010 census. Calumet's nickname is Copper Town U.S.A.

The Keweenaw National Historical Park is an incredible array of buildings, ruins, industrial sites, and abandoned mines. The Keweenaw is dripping with history and it's great that the National Park Service is dedicating resources to preserve and restore unique sites. Their Visitor Center in the old Masonic Temple building in Calumet has lots of cool exhibits and is a great introduction to the historical sites on Keweenaw Peninsula.

So many gift shops have tacky souvenirs. Not this place. Several hand crafted items. My husband bought a hand carved walking stick. Beautiful. Loved the hand made purses and jewelry. Got a couple t-shirts for the family. Staff very informative and pleasant. If you need a quality souvenir this is the place to go.

This is a fairly extensive visitor center with ranger desk/ gift shop/ history museum, plus public restrooms (including family restrooms) and free parking. The museum covers three floors, but save time and concentrate on the first two. The third is basically office space/ meeting room/ playroom. There are elevators but getting a wheelchair to and through the front door coud be difficult. It was interesting to read the police records fro the turn of the century. Most involved swearing or prostitution. An old newspaper column commented on one woman who was convicted of running a brothel pointed out that lots of men were doing the same thing at the time. I was a litle annoyed with all the references to buildings that had been torn down (that happens in any city) but they try to present a complete history of the area.

The trails are great - nice grooming for skate and classic. Some nice rolling terrain and hills. Tons of snow! Nice chalet/warming house and friendly people.

Family recommended Shutes so we stopped in for a beer. The bartender was friendly and service was good and we enjoyed the historic aspects of the building. The bartop is a single piece of wood and the glass over the bar isn't Tiffany but is a canopy that was made by Brunswick. There is a lot of other architectural detail and a cool painting that takes up almost an entire wall

This beautiful and well maintained theatre opened in 1900 and is very grand. There are still performances at this theatre. We took a self-guided tour and enjoyed the grandness. It must have been an amazing addition to Calumet in 1900.

WOW this experience was out of this world. Flying on the 5 person seaplane was so much fun. Our pilot was very professional and answered all of our questions. We flew from Houghton to Rock Harbor in the morning and back late in the afternoon. Our flights lasted only about 40 min but were thrilling. We were very lucky and had a beautiful day so we could enjoy the adventure even more. Isle Royale National Park is accessible only by boat (a 6 hour trip from Houghton) or plane. The park is wonderful wilderness and viewing it from the air was exhilarating.

This red sandstone two story building is beautiful, esthetically and architecturally. Very cool experience visiting this fire museum. All sorts of antique fire equipment, apparatuses, vehicles. So glad they have preserved this important piece of Calumet history. Love the 3 fire station doors. Parking on the street. Friendly and helpful, informative staff who enjoy their jobs.
Highly recommend a visit.
